Note from Don Sept. 20, 02
Dear Friends:
Thanks so much for your kind invitation. However, at 71, I seem to lack the energy I had 50 years ago.
Several years ago I drove back to my old stomping grounds to see what was what. I guess I expected Grand Junction to be as it was, but progress had taken over. Fondly remembered places had gone with the bulldozer, replaced by freeways, housing developments, hamburger stands, traffic congestions….just like a suburb of L.A. But I had a nice bicycle ride in Glenwood.
Maybe I'll just think of it as it was. Alas, you cannot go home again. But you guys and gals have a good time.

CUPID AT MESA CAFETERIA
Ben & Pat Sellers
Recently I noticed the "back-to-school" ads in the newspaper. "It's that time of year again!" I thought to myself. The years have passed so quickly and I remembered my first college year in the fall of 1949 at Mesa.

I came early to the campus to practice football and I also got a job at the college cafeteria to help pay my expenses. At that time the cafeteria was a big, old, gray army mess hall or "day-room", with wooden steps and lots of windows that had to be kept clean! I worked with several other fellows behind the steam table, filling food trays. We also were eyeing all the girls from Mary Rait dorm as they filed in through the door at the very end of the building!

Mrs. Cohen, the cook and our boss, would have to scold us - telling us to serve the food and stopping watching (and chatting with) the girls. But when we spotted the girls we wanted to get to know, we tried very hard to get their attention!

After my wife and I met, the cafeteria played another important role in out courtship. We were elected as "Jane and Joe College". Our election crew posted pictures of us on napkins in the cafeteria as part of the election campaign. And, here we are after all these years, still stuck on each other like peanut butter and jelly!

HOW I MET MY MATE AT MESA COLLEGE
Caryl LaDuke
It was the summer of 1956 and I had just come back as the dorm director at Mesa College. I already knew many of the staff since I had graduated from Mesa just a few years prior to this time. Mrs. Cramer (drama instructor) and I were entering Houston Hall when she introduced me to a young man who was up on a ladder painting for Pop Houston. I should have paid more attention since he became the love of my life. I began getting calls asking me to come down to the Smoke Shack, the local meeting place. I finally found out that the calls were from the fellow on the ladder. I didn't go, but two years later I married him. I have kept him "up in the air" ever since and he has "painted a beautiful life" for me.

Favorite College Memory:
Living in dorm 1956-57. That year they converted one wing to house both guys and gals. The South end was for girls, the North end for boys. Only one problem-the two sides were separated by a "Green Door" which still had the knobs on both sides still in, but locked. Needless to say some ingenious student, guy or gal, figured out how to knock the knobs off and provide views for both sides as each side went down the hall to the bathroom adjacent to the famous door. Anyhow, it was common practice to look over to the other side for both sexes! Anyhow, one night I decided to take a look for myself and low and behold, what do I see, but an "Eyeball A Peeking Through the Green Door!". Just like the popular hit rock and roll song around that time! Of course I started singing right there and then! We all would spend time sitting by the "Green Door" at night, each side telling raunchy, dirty jokes. Each thinking the others wouldn't know who told them. But of course we all knew everybody, including each others voices!!
