Class Notes 1980-89

1980

Kelli S. (Mascarenas) Varney '80
received her A.S. in Home Economics from Mesa State College. She attended Colorado State University earning a B.S. in Textile Science, and East Carolina University where she received a B.S. in secondary education. Kelli completed her M.A. in December 2000. As part of a partnership with the University of Colorado – Denver, Kelli works as a site coordinator at an inner city middle school mentoring teacher candidates. She currently lives in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

1981

Barry Brinton B.S. (Geology) '81,
He owns and operates Land Development Company in Colorado Springs, Colorado where he lives. Barry spent most of his early career working for civil and geotechnical engineering companies along the front range before receiving his Masters of Public Administration from the University of Colorado in 1990, and starting his own company. He is married with three daughters and enjoys all outdoor activities.

B. Jean Sewell (Bainbridge) '82,
Is a Financial Consultant for A.G. Edwards & Sons in Grand Junction, Colorado.

1983

Barbara G. Hamill '83
Lives in Wisconsin with husband Randall Hill. Has a Masters degree in Organizational Management and works as a work comp insurance adjuster for United Heartland. Her hobby is bicycle racing.

Bob Schlagel '83
received his degree in Physical Education and played defensive end on the 1980 all RMAC all District football team. He owns and operates a mortgage company - The Lending Source and has 2 CD's of original music on the market. He lives in Golden, Colorado.

1984

Dwight Johnson '84,
Works for Clear Channel Broadcasting and lives in Victorville, California.

Calvin Mier, BA '84
Went on to begin a successful career in real estate. He lives in Denver. In his spare time he coaches State Championship softball teams. Calvin is divorced and has three children – Crystal, Monique and Anthony.

Brian R. Ward '84
Resides in Inverness, Florida, where he is employed by the Federal Government at Cole Penitentiary.

1985

Lonney J. Head, AS '85
A Central H.S. graduate received his BS Electrical Engineering, University of Colorado '88; MS Engineering Management, University of Colorado '98; MBA University of Maryland in progress. Most of Lonney's career has been with Hughes Aircraft (now Raytheon Systems Co.) and its contractors, where he has progressed from engineering to various increasingly responsible management positions. He enjoys an exciting career which has taken him and his family to interesting locations across the continent and across the Atlantic: Denver, St. Louis, three years in England, Washington, D.C., and this year to San Diego as a Program/Proposal Manager. Lonney married Lori Weese of Grand Junction, who also attended MSC before completing her BA in Journalism at CSU. They have two children: Douglas, 10, and Rachel, 9.

Jeff Hersh, BBA Marketing '85
He works as the sales manager for MobileLogic. Jeff lives in Aurora, Colorado with his wife Lynda and their two children .

Michelle A. Ozbun, AS '85
Received her BS from Colorado State University and Ph. D. from Baylor College of Medicine. She was recently promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque. Michelle's research program focuses on epithelial differentiation, human papillomaviruses and their roles in many types of human cancers.

Perry Passaro, BS '85
Perry is currently working as a school psychologist in Santa Ana, California and also teaching classes at Chapman University. He received a PhD in Educ. Psych, from University of Kentucky in 1988. Kim, Perry’s wife, is also a Mesa State graduate with a degree in nursing. She is working part time at a clinic. They have two daughters, Claire, 17 and Ann, 12.

1986

Micki (Bishop) Frederick'86
received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and currently works for the Littleton Public School District. She married fellow student Jason Frederick – A Match Made At Mesa!

Teri Mingilton BBA '86
Currently lives in Aurora, Colorado with husband, Dale Mingilton and two children Addison (age 6) and Ticen (age 4). Dale works for Firstbank Holding Company and they own our own photography business. They are currently active with our local elementary, school board and chamber. After graduating from Mesa State College, Teri went to work for United Bank now know as Wells Fargo. She worked for over 13 years, 5 of those managing a location in Aurora. After their second child she decided to “retire” to lead a more flexible life with her family.

1987

Jeffery P. Temple '87
is Software Engineer at Intel. Upon graduating from Mesa in 1987 he moved back to Sacramento California. He currently lives with my partner in Sacramento. Earned his Private Pilot's License in 2001 and loves to fly around the Sacramento Valley.

Chris Theriault '87
received his A.A. in Applied Science and currently works for the National Park Service. He also attended Red Rocks Community College earning a certificate in drafting. Chris is married to Mesa State College Alumna Kristi, class of '89.

1988

Cathy F. (Keffeler) Hartt, AAS '75, AS '83, BSN '88
Her two daughters are both commissioned officers. Erica is in the Navy and was deployed on the USS Ramage and now returned home. Stephanie is in the Air Force at Minot, North Dakota and a Mesa State College student from 1998 to 2000.

Michael D. Wise, BA '88
Now living in Emporia, Kansas. Came to Emporia State University in 1988 as Graduate Assistant for the Recreation Department. Graduated with Masters Degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1990. Hired as a full time staff member in the recreation department in the summer of 1990. He is currently employeed as the assistant Director for the Recreation Program and has been here for the entire 13 years. Served on the National Instructional Programming Committee for the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association. Also assisted in the planning, design, and construction of the new ESU student recreation center which opened on February 1, 2002. He is married to wife Shelley, who is a 4th grade teacher in Emporia. They have two boys, Matthew and Jeffrey, and two girls, Meganne and Molly. Likes to race Mountain Bikes, and do home improvements.

1989

Kristi Theriault '89.
Kristi earned her B.S. in Public Accounting and A.A. in Business Administration. She is currently working for the American Animal Hospital Association. She has two daughters – Alyssa and Hannah

Susan (MacGregor) Monroe ' 89
graduated with a degree in Mathematics and went on to graduate school at the University of Denver where she graduated from the School of Science doctoral program. She is currently working as the Senior Supervisor of Analytical Services and Quality Control for Sulzer Biologics in Wheatridge, Colorado. Susan lives in Wheatridge and is married to James Monroe. They have two sons.
