David P Svaldi, PhD
Associate of Arts
Mesa College, 1968
While Dr. Svaldi earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University
in 1983, his undergraduate studies at Mesa College (1966-68)
and the University of Northern Colorado (BA 1970; MA 1972)
built a strong foundation for his future success in higher
education beginning with a 4-year teaching position at Washburn
University. In 1976 he accepted a graduate fellowship at Northwestern
University where he taught and coached a National Championship
Debate Squad. Between 1979 and 1995 he taught and coached
intercollegiate debate at several institutions, completed
his Ph.D., and published an award-winning book, Sand Creek
and the Rhetoric of Extermination, and several articles.
In 1986 Dr. Svaldi and his family moved back to Colorado
and began a productive relationship with Adams State College.
In addition to educating students in the classroom, he was
active in faculty and student governance and selected to serve
in several leadership roles including Faculty Trustee of the
State Colleges in Colorado. In 1996 he was selected out of
a national pool, for a one-year Fellowship from the American
Council of Education to study higher education leadership.
Upon his return he was appointed Vice President for Academic
Affairs at Adams State College and currently serves as Provost.
Dr. Svaldi is proudest of the many outstanding debate students
he has worked with who have gone on to highly successful careers
in law and education.
Most of the credit for any success Dr. Svaldi has had must
go to his family. His late parents, Anthony and Agnes, expected
his success and his 3 brothers (Marvin, Vincent and Dennis)
all graduated from Mesa College showing Dave the way (and
also all completed advanced degrees). Greg, Mary, Linda, his
daughter Andrea, Virginia, Fletcher and Chantine also provided
support. Special thanks to his fine, caring instructors at
Mesa including Morton Perry, Dan Showalter, Dan Roberts, Margaret
