Head
Coach: Chris Hanks
(10th Season)
Coach
Hanks enters his tenth season as the Mavericks' head coach. In nine
seasons at the helm of the Maverick program, Hanks is 358-181 (.664)
and has led the Mavericks to the NCAA Tournament six times (2007,
2006, 2005, 2004, 2002, and 1999), including four consecutive berths.
Under Hanks' leadership, the Mavericks have five Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference titles (2007, 2006, 2005, 2001, 1999) and a
.711 winning percentage. His coaching accomplishments include being
named the National College Baseball Writers Association, NCAA West
Region Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2004.
He
was most recently named RMAC Coach of the Year for 2007, an honor
that was bestowed on him following the 2005 season. His teams have
posted the four highest win totals in school history. Last season's
49-14 mark is the most wins in school history, clipping the mark
his team set in 2005 with 46 victories.
Coach
Hanks' teams have dominated the national scene offensively, posting
fifteen Top 5 finishes in team hitting statistics since 1999. His
teams also have four Top 10 finishes in fielding percentage during
the same time span. Collectively, his teams has won eight National
Statistical Championships in seven years, six of those for hitting
and two for fielding. One of those championships came in 2004 when
the Mavericks set an NCAA Division II national record for doubles
with 190.
Last
season MSC was crowned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular
season champion with a 34-6 league record. The team won eight of
the nine conference series, sweeping five, and posted an 18-game
win streak.
MSC
was seeded second at the NCAA West Regional at Cal-State Los Angeles.
The Mavs finished runner-up to the host team, falling one victory
short of a trip to the Division II Baseball World Series.
In
2006 MSC won the RMAC with a 22-7 record on their way to a 39-19
overall record. In 2005, the Mavericks were 24-4 in conference and
46-16 overall. The Mavericks 46 victories were the most in school
history, and the 24 conference wins were the most conference victories
in RMAC history.
MSC
finished the 2005 season ranked second nationally in batting average
(.361), fourth in homeruns (88), fourth in slugging percentage (.565),
fifth in scoring (9.2 runs per game) and 10th nationally in fielding
percentage (.968).
Coach Hanks served as the Mavericks assistant baseball coach for
six seasons ('93-'98) and an assistant football coach for five seasons
('93-'97).
In
his six seasons as the assistant baseball coach his primary duty
was serving as the teams hitting instructor. In 1997 the Mavericks
finished third in the nation (Division II) with a .363 a batting
average and were fifth in the nation with a .352 batting average
in 1996. He was also responsible for coaching the catchers, first
basemen, as well as the outfielders.
Mesa
State holds the Division II record with 115 home runs in a season
(1997). In 1996 the Mavs finished first in Division II with 96 homeruns.
The Mavericks finished first in the nation in 1996 and 1997 with
a slugging percentage of .609 and .644 respectively. In
1997 the team was first with 156 doubles and led the nation in scoring,
10.3 runs per game.
Chris
is a native of Carbondale where he played football and baseball
at Roaring Fork High School. He was drafted to play baseball out
of high school, but chose to attend the College of Southern Idaho.
He
was a two-time All-American catcher at CSI where he hit 48 homeruns
in his two-year career and led the nation with 26 as a freshman.
He was also a two-time Region 18 Player of the Year selection.
Hanks
was named MVP of the 1988 National Junior College Baseball World
Series played in Grand Junction. Coach Hanks signed with the Boston
Red Sox and played four years in their organization, and a year
with the Detroit Tigers before an arm injury cut his career short.
Last
spring Hanks was named to the NJCAA World Series JUCO "Golden
Anniversary Team." The team is comprised of the top 20 players
and two coaches, that spans over the 50-year history of the World
Series.
Chris
is a 1993 graduate of Mesa State College with a Bachelor of Science
degree in Education. He received his Associates Degree from the
College of Southern Idaho in 1988. In 1997 he earned his Masters
Degree in Physical Education/Pedagogy from the University of Northern
Colorado.
Chris,
and wife Nikki have three children, son Jared (6 1/2), daughters
Kylie (4 1/2) and Natalie (3 1/2). Nikki is a native of Montrose
and a graduate of Mesa State.

Assistant
Coach: Jeff Rodgers (16th Season)
Coach
Rodgers is in his 16th year with the Maverick baseball team
as the pitching instructor. Jeff is a Colorado native, born
and raised in Loveland. He is a 1984 alumni graduate of Mesa
State College where he pitched for the Mavericks and then
continued his career with the Montreal Expos organization.
Prior
to his arrival at Mesa State, Jeff coached at Colorado State
University for six years. He has established one of the finest
reputations for handling pitchers in the region and has tutored
several professional players. Rodgers is an exceptional teacher
and adds, "I am very demanding of myself and I expect
the same from our pitching staff."
Coach
Rodgers has a Bachelor's of Arts in Recreation from Mesa State
College. He is employed at the Grand Junction Regional Center.
Jeff's wife, Traci, graduated from Mesa State and works in
the emergency room at St. Mary's Hospital.

Assistant
Coach: Steve Woytek (8th Season)
Coach
Woytek enters his eighth season with the Maverick coaching
staff.
A
two-year starter for the Mavericks in 1999 and 1998, he earned
first team all-conference athletic and academic honors. A
transfer from Connors State Junior College (Warner, OK), Steve
was an Academic All-American and first team all-region first
baseman in 1997.
Coach
Woytek is the Maverick infield coach and assists on the field
as a hitting instructor. Off the field he is the high school
recruiting coordinator.
A graduate of Mesa State in 1999 with a bachelor's degree
in history, he currently teaches at Grand Junction High School.
He earned his master's degree in Athletic Administration through
the University of Northern Colorado.
His wife Jenny graduated from Northern Colorado and teaches
kindergarten at Chatfield Elementary. Jenny and Steve have
two sons Drew (4) and Brett (2).

Assistant
Coach: Kurtis Beidleman (6th Season)
Coach
Beidleman enters his sixth season with the Maverick coaching
staff.
A
four-year starter for the Mavericks from 1997-2001. At Cheyenne
(Wyo.) Central High School, he was an all-state performer
in basketball and track and was a state champion high jumper.
In
addition to his coaching duties, Beidleman acts as the camp
coordinator for the baseball team.
A graduate of MSC in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in mass
communications, he was the Assistant Sports Director at KFBC
radio at the University of Wyoming Sports Network. Currently
he is the radio personality on "The Team" and for
the JUCO World Series.
Coach
Beidleman and his wife, Stacy, were married in the fall of
2004. Stacy is a graduate of the University of Wyoming Pharmacy
School and works at Family Pharmacy.

Assistant
Coach: Landon Wareham (5th Season)
Coach
Wareham enters his fifth year as a member of the Mavericks
coaching staff.
A
former shortstop for the Mavs from 2000-2003, Wareham was
a three-time all-conference performer and two-time all-region
selection. Prior to his senior season he was selected Pre-Season
All-American. Following his senior year he was drafted by
the Baltimore Orioles.
A
four year starter he holds the all-time career hit record
(246), runs scored (198) and all-time at bats (708). He has
the three highest fielding percentages by a shortstop in school
history.
Coach
Wareham is a native of Olathe where he was a three-sport athlete,
excelling in baseball, football and basketball.
Landon graduated with a degree in business management and
a minor in Spanish. He and his wife, Casey, have one son,
Gage Brent (2 1/2).

David
Jahnke: Baseball Operations (5th Season)
David enters his fifth year as the statistician, as well as
overseeing the daily baseball operations.
A native of Renton, WA., he transferred to MSC from Bellevue
Community College.
At Hazen High School he was a two-time all-conference football
player, an all-league baseball player and league champion in
wrestling. He was selected academic all-state his junior year.
His career highlight is hitting a walk-off grand slam in high
school.
He chose MSC for its size and location. He earned his Bachelor's
Degree in Exercise Science. |
