Mavericks Remain Unbeaten, Defeat Adams State 34-21

Mesa
State football extended their win streak to 8-0, 5-0 in Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Stocker Stadium.
MSC scored 28 unanswered points in the second half on the way to
a 34-21 victory.
Adams
State lead 14-3 at half scoring a touchdown in each quarter. MSC's
Jared Keating's 47-yard field goal in the second quarter
were the Mavs only first half points.
In
the third quarter the Mavericks scored on their first two possessions
to take a 17-14 lead after three quarters. MSC's first touchdown
came on a 33-yard touchdown run by Bobby Coy. MSC's next
score was set up by the defense when Tanner Whaley blocked
the Grizzly punt and MSC took over on the Adams State 42-yard line.
MSC scored five plays later on a Phil Vigil to Drew Bohannan
29-yard touchdown pass.
Brandon
Waymire intercepted a Grizzly pass on the first offensive series
of the 4th quarter stopping an Adams drive and giving the Mavs offense
the ball on its own 16-yard line. MSC drove the ball 84 yards in
7 plays, scoring on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Vigil to
Justin Murray, extending their lead to 24-14.
Following
another MSC defensive stop the Grizzlies were forced to punt and
MSC took over on their own 47-yard line. On this series the Mavericks
went 53 yards in 12 plays pushing their lead to 17 on a 7-yard touchdown
run by Vigil.
Adams
State scored on the ensuing possession to pull to within 21-31.
MSC's Keating sealed the victory with a 49-yard field goal
with 2:36 remaining in regulation.
Coy
led all rushers with 112 yards on 26 carries. Murray had
a team high four receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown. Vigil
finished 16-of-29 for 209 yards and two touchdowns.
DefensivelyBrandon
Charles had a team high 14 tackles (4 solo). Kurt Kissner
finished with eight tackles and three quarterback sacks. MSC had
five sacks on the day.
MSC
will travel to Chadron State College next Saturday to play unbeaten
and #3 ranked Eagles (8-0, 5-0). The game is set for Noon and be
broadcast on the Internet at www.ncaasports.com/divii.
