Mavericks Shutout Colorado Mines, 18-0
(Brandon Waymire Ties Single Game Interception Record)
(November 3, 2007)

Mesa State improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in RMAC action Saturday afternoon with a shutout victory over visiting Colorado School of Mines 18-0. The Mavericks defense held the Orediggers to a minus 7-rushing yards and 158 total yards.

MSC forced six turnovers (5 interceptions, 1 fumble) including three interceptions by Brandon Waymire who tied the single game record for interceptions in a game (Art Berlanga vs Western New Mexico - 2005, Vic Dutandette vs Fort Lewis - 1986). Waymire leads the team with six interceptions on the year. Josh Padilla and Brandon Charles each had an interception in the game.

MSC scored all 18 points in the first half. Jared Keating kicked a 22-yard field goal with 5:27 remaining in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead. Keating extended the lead to 6-0 on a 38-yard field goal at 3:01 in the second quarter. On the ensuing Orediggers drive the defense held Mines to three offensive plays, forcing the Orediggers to punt from their own 24-yard line. A miscue on the snap and Mines punter Adam Sprouse was forced to bat the ball out of the back of the endzone for an MSC safety (8-0).

Following the safety Tommy Campbell returned the Orediggers punt 13-yards to the MSC 48. On the first play from scrimmage Phil Vigil connected with Drew Bohannan for a 50-yard pass reception down to the Mines' 2-yard line. After a false start penalty by MSC pushing the ball back to the 7-yard line, Vigil took the snap and rushed for his seventh touchdown of the year.

MSC scored their final points of the game following a Brandon Charles interception with 55 seconds remaining in the half. MSC drove the ball to the CSM 16-yard line where Keating hit a 33-yard field goal as time expired for a 18-0 lead.

Bobby Coy led all rushers with 105 yards on 25 carries. Vigil was 16-of-32 for 210 yards. Bohannan finished with four receptions for 95 yards.

Kurt Kissner recorded two quarterback sacks on the day bringing his total to 13.5 sacks on the year. Charles, Cody Walker, Mark Gruner and Brandon Birdsall each recorded eight tackles in the game.

MSC will close out the regular season at New Mexico Highlands next Saturday in Las Vegas, NM.
