Mesa Men Win in Double Overtime

Junior Justin Ashbaugh scored on a reverse lay-up with six seconds remaining in regulation to send the game in to overtime Friday night. The Mavericks went on to beat the Orediggers in double overtime 95-89 led by Ashbaugh's game high 28 points. The win improved the team to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in league action.

Five Mavericks scored in double digits with the help of Ryan Mathews' 16 points and Jake Swartzendruber's 13 points off the bench. Kurt Bangle finished 7-of-10 from the floor and tallied 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and one steal. Bassey Ekong contributed 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Trailing by as many as 14 points late in the second half the Mavericks pressure defense led to 21 turnovers for the Orediggers in the game, including 17 in the final three periods. Ashbaugh scored four points in the first overtime and hit 5-of-6 free throws in the second overtime as MSC outscored Mines 9-3 in final overtime period. Ashbaugh finished the game with seven rebounds, four steals and one blocked shot.

The Mavericks will host UC-Colorado Springs on Friday evening and Regis University on Saturday night at Brownson Arena.
