Mesa Men Split, Beat Highlands, Drop OT Game at Western NM

Justin Ashbaugh led the Mavericks Thursday night in an 89-86 win at New Mexico Highlands. Ashbaugh and Ryan Mathews hit two free throws each in the final 13 seconds to defeat the Cowboys.

The win improved the team to 7-7 in league action and snapped a two game losing streak. Ashbaugh finished with a team high 21 points and eight rebounds. Mathews finished with 18 points.

MSC held a 34-32 half-time lead and led by 10 with 3:05 remaining in regulation. The Cowboys went on a 14-5 run to pull to within one point with seven second left. Mathews was fouled and sank both free throws to seal the victory.

Despite 14 treys (14-26) from the Cowboys, the Mavs countered that, shooting 83 percent from the foul line hitting 25-30.

Saturday night Western New Mexico beat MSC 89-86 in overtime on shot at the buzzer. MSC's Mathews tied the game on a trey with 20 seconds left in the OT period as the game looked to be heading in to a second overtime. WNMU's Trey Clarkson hit just his second shot of the evening (both treys) to clinch the Mustangs win.

Mathews finished with 22 points and Ashbaugh recorded his fifth double-double; 21 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Kurt Bangle scored 19 points.

MSC shot 63 percent (29-46) from the field and out rebounded the Mustangs 34-23. MSC's 19 turnovers and the Mustangs 15 treys helped WNMU pull out the victory and improve to 13-10 overall and 9-6 in RMAC action.

MSC will host CSU-Pueblo and Adams State this weekend at Brownson Arena.
