Last season the Mavericks finished 17-10 overall and were crowned
RMAC West Co-Champion posting a 13-6 league record. MSC advanced to
the RMAC Shootout for the 10th time in Heaps' 11 years. The Mavericks
post season honors went to MSC leading scorer Stephen Soriano, named

In 2005-2006 Heaps led the Mavericks to a 19-9 overall record, a 13-6
conference finish and second place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference West Division. The team qualified for the RMAC post season
tournament marking the ninth trip to post season action in Heaps'
10 years. MSC posted a 10-2 home record and was 3-0 at neutral sites.
In 2004-2005 Heaps guided the Mavericks to a 20-8 overall record (13-6
league), second place finish in the RMAC West Division, and fourth
consecutive trip to the RMAC Wells Fargo Shoot-out. MSC advanced to
the championship game for the third time, falling to nationally ranked
Metro State.
In 2003-2004, Heaps led the Mavericks to a 19-10 overall record, Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference west division title (14-5), and the teams'
second NCAA Division II regional tournament berth (1999). Mesa State
won nine consecutive and 17 of its last 20 games to capture the title.
During his tenure the Mavericks have compiled 10 winning seasons and
four 20-game win seasons.
In 1999 and 1997, Coach Heaps guided the Mavericks to 21 wins (21-9,
21-7 respectively). In each of those seasons the Mavericks finished
with 16 conference victories and just three losses. Following the
1999 RMAC championship title season, Heaps was selected RMAC Coach
of the Year, voted on by his peers. In 2001 the team boasted the RMAC
Player of the Year, Jeff Boese, who went on to play in the United
States Basketball League for three seasons.
Heaps has led the Mavericks to 10 RMAC post season tournaments, including
back-to-back (1999, 2000) runs to the championship game. In the 10
RMAC tournament appearances, MSC has reached the finals, semifinal
and quarterfinal round three times each.
Coach Heaps is a former Maverick, playing at Mesa State after earning
all-conference honors at Central Arizona Junior College in 1980. Heaps
was a forward for the Mavericks from 1980 until 1982. Following his
graduation he was Coach Schakel´s assistant until 1986.
He attended Southern Illinois University in the fall of 1986 where
he earned his Master's Degree in Physical Education. In 1987 he was
head coach and physical education teacher at Canterbury High School
in Fort Myers, Florida for four years.
In 1991 he returned to the grand valley and Mesa State as an assistant
coach with the Mavericks, before assuming the head coaching duties
with the retirement of longtime Mesa State Coach, Doug Schakel. As
a fixture in the Maverick program, he inherited the philosophy ingrained
in him, first as a player and then as an assistant coach, the T.E.A.M.
(Together Everyone Achieves More) philosophy continues to be a Mesa
State College tradition.
He is the Director of the Mesa State summer basketball camp, which
is one of the biggest camps in the nation. Coach Heaps is in his 16th
year as a faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology.
Heaps graduated from Mesa State in 1983 with a Bachelor's Degree in
business. He earned his Master's Degree in Physical Education from
Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1987.
A western slope native Heaps grew up in Delta where he starred for
the Panthers. He and wife, Naoma have two daughters, Sarah 19, and
