Cole Johnson Heading to Division II National Tournament
(Wins wrestleback with a Pin to Qualify)

Mesa State sophomore Cole Johnson is the first Maverick wrestler to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Tournament to be held March 14-15 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Johnson took fourth place (165 pounds) with a pin over Adams State's Michael Gallegos to solidify the final spot at 165 pounds. The top four wrestlers in each weight class earn a national tournament berth.

In the final match Johnson was trailing 7-2 in the final period when he pinned Gallegos with under 20 seconds remaining. After a first round bye, Johnson pinned Ft. Hays State's Troy Lussenhop. In the third round he dropped a Major decision (11-2) to top ranked and eventual winner, Zachary Lee from Western State.

In the wrestleback he lost an 8-2 decision to Neb.-Kearney's Keenan McCurdy but went on to defeat San Francisco's Zach Sesar in a 5-3 decision, setting up the match with Gallegos for the final qualifying spot.

Johnson began the season wrestling at 157 pounds. Midway through the season he moved up a weight class and has posted an 8-4 overall at 165 pounds.

MSC placed ninth overall in the RMAC Championships / Regional Tournament with 27 points. Neb.-Kearney clinched the RMAC title with 154 points followed by second place Western State with 129 points.

MSC's Taylor Torisk and Andy Laiminger placed sixth at 157 and 184 pounds respectively.
