Johnson Heading to Division II National Tournament
(Wins wrestleback with a Pin to Qualify)

State sophomore Cole Johnson is the first Maverick wrestler
to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Tournament to be
held March 14-15 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Johnson
took fourth place (165 pounds) with a pin over Adams State's Michael
Gallegos to solidify the final spot at 165 pounds. The top four
wrestlers in each weight class earn a national tournament berth.
In
the final match Johnson was trailing 7-2 in the final period
when he pinned Gallegos with under 20 seconds remaining. After a
first round bye, Johnson pinned Ft. Hays State's Troy Lussenhop.
In the third round he dropped a Major decision (11-2) to top ranked
and eventual winner, Zachary Lee from Western State.
In
the wrestleback he lost an 8-2 decision to Neb.-Kearney's Keenan
McCurdy but went on to defeat San Francisco's Zach Sesar in a 5-3
decision, setting up the match with Gallegos for the final qualifying
spot.
Johnson
began the season wrestling at 157 pounds. Midway through the season
he moved up a weight class and has posted an 8-4 overall at 165
pounds.
MSC
placed ninth overall in the RMAC Championships / Regional Tournament
with 27 points. Neb.-Kearney clinched the RMAC title with 154 points
followed by second place Western State with 129 points.
MSC's
Taylor Torisk and Andy Laiminger placed sixth at 157
and 184 pounds respectively.
