Mavs Split Series with Neb.-Kearney, Sweep Saturday Doubleheader

Mesa State baseball split a four game home series with visiting Neb.-Kearney winning Saturday's doubleheader from the Lopers. MSC stands at 23-12 overall and 14-6 in RMAC action.

Friday night in game one of the series the Lopers Ryan Sheldon pitched a complete game for his fifth win of the year. Sheldon allowed three runs on eight hits, striking out seven Mav batters. UNK never trailed in the game scoring four runs in the fourth and three in the eighth inning. MSC pulled to within two runs (2-4) in the sixth off a solo homerun by pinch hitter Craig Lanzarotta and a run scored by Andrew Martinez on a balk by Sheldon. UNK scored three in the eighth and MSC one run in the bottom of the eighth, falling 7-3. Starter Chris Carma dropped to 5-2 on the year allowing six runs on 10 hits in 7.1 innings.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader MSC scored 13 runs on 13 hits. UNK scored all five of their runs in the third inning to tie the game before MSC posted a four run fourth inning and added four more runs in the sixth. Andrew Martinez went 4-for-4 while Matt Miller and Grant Vickers combined for five hits, five RBI and three runs. Jason Enewold earned his first win of the year in relief for starter Aaron Guinn. Enewold went 3.0 innings allowing one run on four hits and striking out two batters.

MSC scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two for an 11-10 win. UNK tied the game in the top of seventh scoring two runs, one run on a wild pitch. In the Mavs bottom half Chris Cassell scored the winning run on a error by the Lopers to complete the Saturday sweep. The two teams combined for 21 runs, 25 hits and seven errors. Brent Lamaster picked up the win (2-3).

Sunday's game four of the series was an 11-inning affair which resulted in an 8-7 UNK win. MSC scored a run in the eighth inning to tie the game at seven. In the top half of the 11th the Lopers led off with a single by Trey Howell who eventually scored the winning run two batters later on a single up the middle by Joe Nowaczyk. UNK out hit the Mavs 15-6 and five of the Lopers eight runs were unearned.

MSC will travel to Colorado Mines this weekend for a four game series beginning Friday.
