MAVERICKS COACHING STAFF

Coach Ramunno enters his 10th season as head football coach of the Mesa State College Mavericks. Hired in 1998, Ramunno has led the Mavericks to two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles (2003, 2000) and two NCAA Division II national tournament playoff appearances (2003, 2000). In his nine seasons at the helm the Mavericks are 52-50.

This year the team will look to climb back to the top of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with 33 letterwinners and 22 starters on the 2007 squad. With the return of five RMAC 2007 Preseason All-Conference selections, four unanimous, the Mavericks are poised to make a run for the 2007 RMAC title.
In 2006 Ramunno's Mavericks had six RMAC All-Conference honorees, 14 RMAC All-Academic players and five players named to the 2006 National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter Football Team.

This past spring MSC's Creed James was named to the National Football Foundation National Honor Society Inaugural Class. James and teammate Austin Schneider were selected to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Second Team and All-District Team respectively.
In 2003 the Mavericks were crowned RMAC champions, going 8-0 in conference play and finishing 10-2 overall. In the Mavericks two RMAC title years, Ramunno has led the team to a perfect 16-0 conference record.

The 2003 season Ramunno guided the Mavericks all-time record high national ranking of 10th in the country, earning the Mavericks the privilege to host its first ever Division II playoff game. MSC ranked third in rushing offense in the country, averaging 305.6 yards per game. The Mavericks were ranked in nine team categories at season's end; five defensive, three offensive, and one special team's category.

Coach Ramunno has twice been voted by his peers as RMAC Coach of the Year in 2003, 2000. He earned Regional Coach of the Year honors by the American Football Coaches Association and Colorado Coach of the Year by the National Foundation & College Hall of Fame.

In just his third year at the helm (2000), Ramunno led MSC to a 10-3 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. Mesa State won a berth to the NCAA Division II Playoffs and became the first ever RMAC team to win a Division II playoff game, advancing to the Division II quarterfinals with a 40-21 road victory over Northeastern Oklahoma State University.

Ramunno is no stranger to the grand valley or to winning traditions. He spent 10 years at Palisade High, in 1988 as an assistant, and accepting the head job in 1989. Over those nine years he compiled a 79-31 overall record, and four consecutive State 3A titles. (1994-1997).

Coach Ramunno has compiled a 52-50 overall record at MSC and a 39-36 conference mark. In his nine years, the Mavericks have two RMAC titles (2003, 2000) and two NCAA Division II playoff appearances (2003, 2000). He has had 55 RMAC All-Conference selections, including one Player of the Year (Andy Coryell, 2000).

Coach Ramunno has been honored several times for his accomplishments in high school coaching. He earned Colorado Coach of the Year (1996), Denver Broncos Coach of the Year (1996), and Rocky Mountain Coach of the Year (1997). In his last four years at PHS he had 23 All-State players and a 53-3 record.

Ramunno played in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears before becoming a graduate assistant coach at the University of Wyoming in 1987. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wyoming where he was an All-America selection in 1984, a two-time All Western Athletic Conference performer, and team captain. Also a high school standout, Ramunno graduated from Steamboat Springs High School where he was a two-time All-State and All-Conference performer. He was selected Lineman of the Year as a senior, and captain of the north team in the All-State game.

In addition to his head coaching duties Coach Ramunno is in his 10th year as a professor in the Department of Kinesiology.

Joe and his wife Sandy, have two children, son Niko (10), and daughter, Calli (8).

Darin Robidoux - Co-Defensive Coordinator / Linebacker Coach

Darin Robidoux head shotCoach Robidoux begins his 13th season as a member of the Maverick coaching staff. This will mark his first season as Co-Defensive Coordinator. The past four seasons he was the Mavs Offensive Coordinator. In his 12 years at MSC he has worked with the linebackers, three years with the wide receivers and nine years he spent coaching the running backs.

In the Mavericks run for the RMAC title in 2003, the team finished third in rushing offense (305.6 ypg), ninth in scoring offense (37.8 ppg) and 25th overall in total offense (421.3 ypg).

Robidoux was a three year starter at fullback for the Mavericks from 1991-1994. He was on the Dean's List in 1994, selected KSTR Star Performer of the Week and Outstanding Student of the Week. He was a three-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference All-Academic selection.

A graduate of Grand Junction Central High School where he was a two-sport athlete, he started on the football team and was on the 1990 state championship basketball team. He earned his bachelor's degree in Human Resource Management from Mesa State in 1996 and his master's degree in Sports Administration from the University of Northern Colorado (2001).

He enters his seventh year teaching for the Department of Kinesiology. Coach Robidoux is a member of the American Football Coaches Association.

Robidoux is married to the former, Morgan Miller. Morgan is a graduate of Mesa State College and is the college's Registration Coordinator. Darin and Morgan are the proud parents of daughter Hailee Rae (1 year).

Bill Stafford - Co-Defensive Coordinator / Defensive Line
/ Recruiting Coordinator

Bill Stafford head shotCoach Stafford enters his fifth season as the Mavericks defensive line coach and his first season as Defensive Coordinator.

Stafford is a graduate of Colorado State University where he started for the Rams' offensive line during his five season college career. He earned his bachelor's degree in business.

He has a long list of accomplishments as a high school football coach which began in 1984 at Brighton High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then returned to Colorado to coach the offensive line for Niwot High School (1986-1990) and Skyline High School (1992-1994). From 1995-1998, as Offensive Coordinator, he led Erie High School to victory in the 1997 Class A State Championship. In 2001 and 2002, as the Lyons High School Offensive Coordinator, the team finished as state runner-up.

In 2003, Coach Stafford returned to Colorado State University as a Graduate Assistant where he helped coach and recruit for CSU Rams football.

Stafford and his wife, Laura, have a combined family of six children; Brandy, Jessica, Jessi, Ben, Sarah and Sierra.

Jon Boyer - Quarterbacks, Running Back, Wide Receivers

Coach Boyer enters his first year as a member of the Mavericks coaching staff. He will coach quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers.

Boyer, a local standout at Palisade High School, played for head coach Joe Ramunno from 1993-1996 as the Bulldogs quarterback, leading PHS to three state titles.

Boyer attended Colorado State University from 1997-2000 before transferring to University of Northern Colorado. He was the starting quarterback for the UNC Bears in 2000 and 2001. Following his graduation from UNC in May 2002, Boyer was a strength and conditioning coach at a facility in Greeley.

In 2004 and 2005 Boyer was a member of the UNC staff as the Bears quarterback coach. In addition to his coaching duties he pursued his master's degree in Sports & Exercise Science Sport Pedagogy.

He earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science (2002) and his master's degree in December (2006).

Boyer is married to the former Vanessa Gates, a graduate of Palisade High School and Colorado State University. Vanessa is currently teaching fifth grade at Jackson Elementary in Greeley and will graduate with her master's degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado next spring. The couple looks forward to returning to Grand Junction, being an integral part of Mesa State College and the grand valley.
