Men's
Soccer Record First Victory in School History
(Shutout Colorado Christian 6-0)
(September 16, 2007)
Mesa
State men's soccer team, in its first year of existence, won its
first ever soccer game Sunday afternoon in a 6-0 shutout of visiting
Colorado Christian University.
The
Mavericks scored 3 goals in each half and recorded 34 shots to the
Cougars 12. Freshman Sam Pinegar scored the Mavs first goal
and what proved to be the game winner in the tenth minute of the
game (9:19) on a header off a pass from Eric Anderson. Anderson
had two assists on the day and also scored his second goal of the
year in the game. Jeremy Brooks and Ben Potter both
claimed their first goals of the season in the first half. Brooks'
header came off a corner kick (Nick Gumpert) and Potter
scored off an assist by Joseph Hickman.
Anderson
opened the second half (48:44) with a header off a pass from Sam
Pinegar. Sam Dixon and Potter scored the final
two goals just under two minutes apart to cap off the Mavericks
first victory in school history. Dixon's goal found the
lower left side of the net and Potter the left corner off
an assist from Anderson.
MSC's
goalkeeping duo of Josh Tinaglia and Billy Martinez
combined for the shutout. Tinaglia started the game and the
second half before exiting with four saves on the day. Martinez
also recorded four saves in his 28:01 minutes of action.
Next
up for the Mav men is a two game home stand beginning this Friday
night at 7 PM versus UC-Colorado Springs. Sunday MSC will host CSU-Pueblo
at 1:30 PM.
