2001 Inductees
JON BASKIN - Jon came to Mesa State in 1988 after attending
San Diego State University on a basketball scholarship from 1986-1987.
He was a standout basketball player for MSC from 1988-1991 and was
a three-time District VII player of the year. He is the all-time
leading scorer in the school's history (2,227 points) and also holds
the school record for field goal percentage (73.9), free throws
made (490), rebound average (10.1) and field goals made (833). Jon
is also the second all-time leader in scoring average (24.5).
"Jon's success was a direct result of his hard work and dedication
to the game and to MSC. He has left a monumental impression on MSC
basketball," states Paul Cain, Jon's former roommate and teammate.
Another teammate, Jeremy Cox said, "Over the past 10 years,
my appreciation and admiration for Jon has only grown. As a coach,
I realize that players with the ability and attitude that Jon possesses
is a rarity, and we are always looking for a 'Jon Baskin'."
Jon graduated from Steamboat Springs High School where he excelled
in basketball, track and football. After attending SDSU and receiving
his bachelor's degree from MSC, he continued his education at the
University of Nebraska where he received his master's degree. Jon
resides in Denver with his wife, Louise, and daughter Julia. He
is a marketing associate with Nobel-Sysco Foods.
KEVIN FLOHR - Kevin graduated from Glenwood Springs High
School in 1979 where he participated in basketball. He was named
All-Conference of the Northwestern League for three years. During
his junior and senior years he was named All-State and received
the Denver Post 2AA Player of the Year in 1979. That same year the
Basketball Officials Association honored Kevin with the Sportsmanship
Award.
Kevin entered Mesa State in 1979 and showed his ability on the
court by being named RMAC All-Conference during his sophomore, junior
and senior year. He was also named to the District VII team his
junior and senior year. He was the RMAC leading scorer in 1983,
team captain that same year, and held Mesa State's scoring record
for seven years. He stands third in scoring (1,568 points) and was
the first MSC basketball player to have his jersey retired.
"As great a player as Kevin was, he was even better as a person.
I don't think I've ever seen a better father or husband" states
Doug Schakel, Kevin's college coach. Jim Heaps, a teammate says,
"Kevin was not only a great player, he was a great teammate
as well. He epitomized what a Mesa State athlete is all about -
a good player, a good student and a great person."
He and his wife, Linda, have three sons and live in Glenwood Springs
where Kevin is manager of a City Market store.
SHANE EDMONDSON FORREST - Shane attended Montrose High School,
graduating in 1985 having participated in tennis for two years and
volleyball for three years. She was junior class president and senior
class treasurer. She was also a member of the National Junior Honor
Society.
During her years at MSC (1985-1988) her special athletic and academic
achievements were outstanding. Shane was a volleyball player all
four years and played on the tennis team (1989). She helped lead
the volleyball team to three undefeated conference championships
- a career team record of 197-41. She was a two-time All-Conference
and All-District selection in 1987 and 1988 and was selected RMAC
Player of the Year in 1988. The honor of being an Academic All-Conference
honoree was given to her in 1987 and 1988. Shane was named to the
NAIA All-American 2nd team also in 1988. She ranks fourth all-time
in kills (1148), sixth in blocks (409) and seventh in service aces
(118).
Shane was inducted into Psi Chi, a National Honor Society in Psychology,
while attending MSC. She was also listed on the President's and
Dean's List several semesters and was named as Outstanding Student
Athlete in 1991.
Her volleyball coach, Rusty Crick said, "She is one of the
best to have ever played at Mesa. She excelled both in the classroom
and on the court. In 1986 we won a school record 42 matches and
went to the National Volleyball Championships where we placed 7th.
Shane's commitment to excellence got us there. Her efforts led us
to many accomplishments during her career at MSC."
Shane received her master of arts in Therapeutic Recreation from
the University of New Mexico in 1992. She presently is employed
by Montrose County School District where she is case manager in
the Expulsion Intervention and Prevention Program and volleyball
coach. Shane and her husband, Joel, live in Montrose.
PHYLLIS JENNINGS JOHNSON - Phyllis attended Middle Park
High School in Granby, Colorado, and graduated in 1984 having participated
in volleyball, basketball, and track. In volleyball she was named
All-State and was a two-time All-Conference selection in volleyball
and basketball.
Phyllis played on four consecutive unbeaten RMAC championship teams
(1984-1987) and had a 129-42 career record. She still holds the
career record for blocks (850) and holds the single-season record
for blocks (320), assisted blocks (213), solo blocks (107) and hitting
percentage (.389). She was 2nd team All-American in 1986 and honorable
mention All-American in 1987.
Rusty Crick, her MSC coach states, "I have coached hundreds
of players and Phyllis stands out as one of the best to have attended
and played at Mesa State. She did not lose a match against a conference
team her entire four years at Mesa State."
Phyllis graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Management. She
lives in Winter Park, Colorado with her husband, Robert, and son,
Wyatt.
JACK SCOTT - Jack Scott, a 1945 graduate of Fruitvale (now
Central High School), entered Mesa College in 1948 after gaining
top scoring honors and a high school conference championship. He
was one of five high school basketball players who went on to play
college basketball.
From 1948-1950 Jack was an instrumental player on Mesa's basketball
team. He was named All-Conference in 1949 and 1950, was one of the
tope ten scorers in the conference both years, and helped MSC win
the Colorado Conference championship. Jack was named "Joe College"
in 1950. He had a successful career as a high school coach at Hotchkiss
from 1957-1963 where he led his team to the state tournament. He
returned to Mesa State where he was assistant track and men's basketball
coach from 1963-1967; head women's basketball coach from 1981-1985;
and housing director and director of admissions and records for
twenty-three years.
"Jack's loyalty, dedication and commitment to MSC for more
than four decades are immeasurable," Tillie Bishop; friend
and former coworker, said. "He was an unbelievable ambassador
and recruiter of athletes and new students. Even today he continues
to represent the college with honor and distinction."
Jack and his wife, Lena Mae, live in Grand Junction and have five
children.
FRIENDS OF MESA STATE - ORVILLE BOGE - AND - DON MACKENDRICK
Orville Boge and Don MacKendrick are being inducted into the 2001
Hall of Honor for outstanding service and contribution to Mesa State
College athletics. Both of these individuals are retired professors
from MSC and have emeritus status.
In 1956 Mr. Boge and Mr. MacKendrick started volunteering their
time to athletics. Orville, a chemistry professor from 1956-1996,
volunteered as a timekeeper and scoreboard operator for football,
basketball and wrestling for 40 years. Don, a history professor
at MSC from 1956-1990,completed his final season as the official
scorer at men's basketball games at the end of the 2000 season having
served for 44 years at the scorekeepers' table. He also served as
Dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences from 1977 to
1990.
Jay Jefferson states, "It is almost unbelievable to have two
individuals volunteer their time for such a long span of time and
in addition, contribute financially to athletics. Each is truly
a friend of MSC athletics."
Both Mr. Boge and Mr. MacKendrick live in Grand Junction.
