Fall to NM Highlands, Tie with CSU-Pueblo

Mesa
State soccer team dropped to 5-4-2 overall and 1-4-1 in conference
play following this weekends action at home. Friday afternoon the
Cowgirls from New Mexico Highlands scored the game winning goal
in overtime to come from behind for their fifth win of the season.
NMHU
took a 1-0 lead in to half on a one on one shot from Monica Vasquez.
Early in the second half (47:54) MSC's Lauren Sell scored
her sixth goal of the season on a penalty kick for a 1-1 tie. The
Mavericks took the lead (80:54) on Rachelle Ormond's first
goal of the year off a pass from Sell. With under three minutes
remaining in regulation the Cowgirls tied the game off an indirect
kick.
NMHU's
leading scorer Monica Vasquez shot the game winning goal 6:51 in
to the overtime on a rebound off the goalie deflection.
MSC
out shot the Cowgirls 25-16 but had no shots in the overtime period.
Sunday
against CSU-Pueblo the Mavericks out shot the ThunderWolves 38-8
and registered 10 corner kicks (T-Wolves - 0) but allowed two second
half goals to CSUP.
MSC's
Abby Jarvis scored her first goal of the year off a cross
pass from Ashley Nemmers and a 1-0 lead. CSUP tied the game
in the second half (52:08) on a breakaway goal in the lower left
corner. MSC took a 2-1 lead at the 63:54 mark on an unassisted goal
by Kylie Kegans. With under 10 minutes remaining in regulation
CSUP's Sarah Deffit found the back of the net and a 2-2 tie.
In
the double overtime periods MSC out shot CSUP 8-3, including 3 shots
on goal. CSUP goalkeeper was credited with 17 saves on the day.
MSC goalkeeper Kaitlin Bennett played the entire game and
registered 3 saves.
MSC
will travel to San Francisco to play Cal-State Stanislaus (9/30)
and San Francisco University (10/2) before returning home to host
Fort Lewis College on October 5.
