Split at Home with Western New Mexico
(Game One: 11-10, Game Two: 8-16, Game Three: 5-6,

Mesa State softball split their final regular season home series
against Western New Mexico. MSC forced the split winning game four
of the series in extra innings Sunday afternoon at Bergman Field.
MSC improved to 24-16 overall and 22-14 in league play.
The series began Saturday with a scheduled doubleheader with the
Mustangs who entered the weekend 22-25 overall and 16-16 in RMAC
action.
Mesa State trailed 10-8 in game one of Saturday' doubleheader before
rallying in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs for an
11-10 victory over the Mustangs. MSC scored three runs on two hits
and were helped by a throwing error which resulted in two runs.
WNMU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, including a grand
slam by Amanda DeMerritt. MSC tied the game at 5-5 after the second
inning and held an 8-6 lead heading in to the sixth inning. The
Mustangs scored four runs in the top of the sixth for a 10-8 lead,
but could not hold on as the Mavericks rallied for three in their
last at bat. MSC's Jamie Prather went 3 for 4 and Leslie
Reed was 2 for 4 with three RBI and three runs scored.
In game two of the doubleheader the Mustangs never trailed after
erasing a 2-0 deficit after one inning by scoring eight runs in
the top of the second. WNMU scored at least one run in all but two
innings and registered 19 hits in a 16-8 victory. MSC tallied 14
hits including a 3 for 3 day from the plate for Samantha Wyatt.
MSC's Alicia Neuschwanger who picked up the victory in game
one was credited with the loss in game two.
Game one Sunday the Mustangs scored the winning run in the top of
the seventh in a 6-5 victory. MSC tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom
of the fifth scoring four runs on five hits, including a two run
homerun by Anita Diaz. Western New Mexico started the seventh
inning with back-to-back singles. A double to center field with
one out scored the eventual winning run. MSC's Jamie Prather,
Leslie Reed and Anita Diaz combined for seven of the
Mavs 12 hits.
MSC forced the series split in an extra inning victory, 6-5 (8 innings),
on a Jamie Prather single to right field scoring Samantha
Wyatt. MSC tied the game at 5-5 in seventh to force the extra
inning. Starter Kelsey McCoy allowed no hits in the eighth,
in a three up, three down inning. MSC's eighth inning victory came
with three runners on and two outs. Prather's RBI single ended the
game. Prather and Wyatt combined for four hits, four
RBI and three runs in the game.
MSC will close out the regular season on the road at Adams State
College next Saturday and Sunday.
