Katrice
Thomas - Head Coach
Coach
Thomas enters her first year as the head coach, having been the
top assisant a year ago with the Mavericks.
Prior to coming to MSC, Thomas coached at Doherty High School, her
alma mater, in Colorado Springs, CO. At Doherty she helped the girls
win their first Metro Championship title in four years, and coached
two state qualifiers in the 4x100 (7th) and 4x200 (12th) relays.
She also helped the next generation of sprint superstar hopefuls
with Joe Gentry Track Troupe, a USATF junior track club. At the
USATF Colorado Association Junior Olympic Championships, Thomas
saw her athletes, GinAsia Hamilton cross the line 1st in both the
400 and 200m dash with times of 60.43 and 25.95. Chelsie Horton
placed 3rd in the 100m (13.79); 3rd in the 200m (28.74) and 2nd
in the 400 (65.08). Hamilton also advanced to Nationals where she
was the silver medallist in the 200m with a time of 25.55, and was
fifth place in the 400m (58.41). Hamilton and Horton both competed
in the midget age group (ages 12-13).
Thomas
earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Technical Journalism and a
double option in Coaching and Ethnic Studies from Colorado State
University. While at CSU she also competed for the Rams on the track
in the short sprints. Thomas went from running a 58.99 in the 400m
as a freshman to taking 2nd place in the Mountain West Conference
Championships, being ranked in the top 50 in the nation. She was
the Rams outdoor record holder with a time of 53.6 in just her sophomore
season. She also holds the indoor 400m record and helped the Rams
break records in the 4x100, 4x200, Sprint Medley and the 4x400 (indoor)
relays.
Just
as she did in her own career, Thomas is looking forward to the challenge
of helping Mesa State Track and Field athletes meet their own aspirations
and exceed the expectations of others.
