Mavs Sweep Three-Game Road Trip
(Beat Mines, Colorado Christian, Metro)
(Article by Stephanie Dumas)

Mesa State women's volleyball started the weekend off right Thursday night as they defeated Colorado School of Mines 30-16, 25-30, 31-29, 30-27. Mines (1-6 in RMAC) gained some confidence in game two as they had 17 kills to Mesa's 15, but the Mavs ended up winning that category as they finished the game with 73 kills to Mines' 52.

Drew Choules recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs while Tessa Andrews came close with 18 kills and 9 digs. Dara Waialae and Krista Ubersox complemented those kills with 36 and 24 assists respectively.

Mesa State repeated their efforts Friday night when they went to Lakewood, Colorado to compete against Colorado Christian. The Mavs (5-4) were able to conquer the Cougars (0-8) in three games (30-25, 30-17, 31-29). Although CCU couldn't hang with Mesa in games one and two, they came out strong in game three and Mesa had a run for their money, having to finish strong and hold off a tough rally from the Cougars. CCU came out ready to play gaining an 8-4 lead in game three, but that lead wouldn't last for long. Mesa came back to tie the game at 26-26 and after a few plays of battling back and forth and tying again at 29, Mesa prevailed and went on to win the match 31-29.

Kristin Schnake came up big, as she was the only player for the Mavs in double digits in kills with 11. Schnake also recorded a double-double adding 10 digs. Ubersox led the Mavs with 11 digs and 20 assists.

Saturday night the Mavs completed their three-game road trip finishing off and defeating Metro State, extending their win streak to four. Mesa took games one and two (30-27, 30-23), while Metro rallied back to take games three and four (27-30, 22-30). Finally, after tying at 8 in the fifth set, Mesa went on to score seven of the last eight points in the final game. Although it was a battle until the end, the Mavs came out on top in kills (73-72) and assists (68-66).

Mesa knew they were going to have to bring their A-game if they wanted to beat Metro (5-3 in RMAC), and they did just that as four players were in double digits in kills. Alisan Tompkins led the way with 18 kills, Jessica Bird 15, Schnake 13, and Lindsey Jefferson 10. Tompkins also finished the game with a double-double having 15 digs to match Choules' 15. Ashley Loftsgard had 18 digs on the night.

Up next; the Mavs are back at home this Friday and Saturday at 7 pm to host Nebraska-Kearney and Chadron State.
