Earn Split in Home Opener
(Fall to Pueblo, Beat Adams)
(Article by Stephanie Dumas)
The
Mesa State Women's volleyball team opened up at home this weekend
with a split, losing to CSU-Pueblo, 29-31, 30-16, 27-30, 30-22,
15-17, and beating Adams State 30-27, 27-30, 30-28, 30-24.
The
Mavs who are now 5-7, 1-3 in RMAC play fought hard and showed some
heart as they took Pueblo to 5 games falling 15-17 in the last match.
MSC came up on top in attacks, hitting .156 percent to the ThunderWolves
.047 (70 kills to their 46). MSC had three players in double digits
kills with Drew Choules leading the way with 15, Jessica
Bird 14, and Kristen Schnake with 13. Melissa Jones and
Caitlyn Jewell from Pueblo had 11 and 10 kills respectively. Choules
also recorded 20 digs to go along with Ashley Loftsgard's
25 digs. Dara Waialae contributed 35 set assists and Krista
Ubersox had 22 assists on the night.
It
seemed like everything went in favor of MSC except for the win on
the record. When asked what went wrong, senior captain Drew Choules
said that they have just been struggling to finish the game. She
believes in her teammates and thought they played well but knows
that they as a team are capable of playing better than they did
against Pueblo. "If we can just stop playing as individuals
and more as a team and limit our unforced errors we'll be fine."
On
Saturday night the Mavs looked to revenge on the night before and
were successful as they beat the Grizzlies in 4 games. The Mavs
had 62 kills to Adams' 60 and once again had three players record
double digits kills, Bird with 13, Gabrielle Lovato
and Lindsey Jefferson each with 10, and Choules right
behind adding 9 kills and 17 digs. Loftsgard had 21 digs
on the night and Waialae recorded 34 set assists for the
game.
The
Mavs continue their home stand at Brownson Arena, Tuesday night
at 7 PM when they face Fort Lewis who are 3-1 in conference play.
