Mesa Seniors Finish Strong at Home

Friday night, the Mavs took on New Mexico Highlands winning 30-15, 30-26, 30-23, 30-22. Highlands (2-16 in RMAC) were in last place in conference standings with no chance of making it to the RMAC tournament, while the Mavs were fighting for a better seed in the tournament.

Senior Drew Choules, who played well for her last showing at Brownson, had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs. Alisan Tompkins led all players with 18 kills, while Jessica Bird added 13. Krista Ubersox also contributed a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs and Dara Waialae was close with 25 assists and 9 digs.

Saturday night, Krista McCracken and Choules were honored on Senior Night and then went on to beat Western New Mexico 30-24, 21-30, 30-28, 30-24. With the win Mesa clinched the #6 seed in the RMAC Tournament and will play #3 seed UC-Colorado Springs in the first round on Friday, November 9 in Kearney, NE. Mesa played UC-Colorado Springs once this season dropping a five game match to the Mountain Lions.

Although it was Senior night, sophomores Kristen Schnake and Tompkins, and juniors Waialae and Ubersox stood out, all finishing with double-doubles. Schnake led all players with 18 kills and also adding 14 digs and Tompkins right behind with 17 kills and 12 digs. Ubersox assisted 26 times and had 15 digs and Waialae added 31 assists and 12 digs. Choules also recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.

Next up, Mesa travels to Kearney, Nebraska, host of the 2007 RMAC Tournament.
