Mavericks
Coaching Staff 2007
Head
Coach: Dave Fleming (3rd year)
Coach
Fleming enters his third season at the helm of the Mesa State College
women's volleyball program. In just his first two seasons he led
the Mavericks to a 42-22 overall record, two NCAA Division II tournament
berths and one RMAC west division title. In 2005 he led the team
to its first ever post season victory. Last season Fleming guided
the team to the NCAA Southwest Region championship game, falling
2-3 to national ranked West Texas A&M.
Fleming was hired in the spring of 2005, becoming just the fourth
head coach in the program's history.
In just Fleming's
second season at the helm he guided the Mavericks to its best finish
in school history, since going Division II, advancing to the NCAA
Division II Southwest Region championship game. MSC fell one victory
short of advancing to the National Tournament's, Elite Eight.
After starting the season 0-8, including losses to #5 ranked Minnesota
Duluth and #11 Florida Southern, Fleming welcomed the tough early
schedule. MSC went 19-7 the remainder of the year posting an eight
match win streak in mid-October.
MSC entered the Southwest Region Tournament as the #3 and defeated
RMAC foes, the University of Neb.-Kearney and Metro State, 3-2.
In the semi-final match versus Metro the Mavericks were on the brink
of elimination before winning game four of the match, 38-36, and
put away the Roadrunners, 15-12 in the decisive game. Metro won
the previous three meetings during the season, holding a 9-2 game
advantage. In the championship game against #18 ranked West Texas
A&M the Mavericks pushed the Lady Buffs to a five-game thriller
(30-27, 26-30, 19-30, 30-22, 7-15).
In 2005 he guided the team to a 15-4 conference record, winning
the west division crown and posting a 9-1 home record. The Mavs
only home loss of the year was at the hands of NCAA national runner-up,
University of Neb.-Kearney.
MSC started
the year 7-0 before dropping three consecutive matches. The team
then went on two runs of four straight victories before a loss and
concluded the season winning eight of their final 10 matches, including
another 7-0 streak. After three straight losses in early September,
the Mavs never lost more than one game in a row. On November 18,
2005 at the Southwest Region tournament hosted by Neb.-Kearney,
Fleming led the Mavericks to its first Division II post season victory
in a 3-0 sweep of Western New Mexico.
Fleming, a
former assistant coach at the University of California Los Angeles
(UCLA), served as an assistant coach for the Bruins for four years
in which the team compiled a record of 86-43, three trips to the
Elite 8 NCAA Championships and four NCAA Tournament berths. His
four seasons at UCLA he coached under the legendary, Andy Banachowski,
whose 1037 wins is more than any other coach in the history of Division
I collegiate women's volleyball. Fleming's primary responsibility
was as defensive coordinator and coaching the outside hitters. He
had a strong presence in fundraising for the UCLA volleyball program,
recruiting, as well as handling the filming, editing and statistical
analysis.

at UCLA, Fleming was a member of the coaching staff for the Women's
National Team, which played in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. In 1995

the first gold won by the USA women's team in a major international
competition.

student. Upon graduation he was a volunteer assistant at the University
of Michigan from 1992-1994 while completing his master's degree.
Upon his arrival
in California to work with USA Volleyball he also was a coach with
the San Diego Volleyball Club for eight years (1994-2001). Fleming
earned Coach of the Year honors and a conference title at Valhalla
High School where he served as head coach from 1997-1998. From 2001-2003
he was a coach with the Sports Shack Volleyball Club, while an assistant
with UCLA.

from Denison University (1992). He was a starter for the men's tennis
team and an outside hitter for the club volleyball team. He received
