Mavs Fall to Fairbanks and Anchorage
(Article by Stephanie Dumas)

Mesa State traveled to Anchorage, AL this past weekend to play in the Glacier Classic. Friday night, the Mavs (1-5) faced Fairbanks (3-1) in a back-and-forth battle.

Fairbanks got the advantage going into the locker room at half-time with a 35-32 lead. In the second half, Mesa battled to keep the game close but lost it 67-71. The Mavs shot just 39.4% from the field and only made 3 of their 17 attempts from 3-point range.

Kelsie Gourdin led the team with 23 points and 9 rebounds and Brittany Fowler added 10 points. Sarah Herrin led all players with 20 points.

Saturday night, Mesa had an even bigger challenge when they faced 5th ranked (nationally) Alaska Anchorage, who also just recently beat Division I opponent Washington State.

Anchorage (6-0), dominated the first half, shooting 50% from the field (21-42) and also from 3-point range (10-20), and led the half by an average of 20 points with a 56-29 half-time lead. Mesa did manage to only allow Anchorage to score 38 points in the second half, scoring 29 themselves, falling to the SeaWolves, 58-94. Once again they shot below 40% from the field (39.2%) and had 23 team turnovers.

Gourdin had 17 points and 6 boards while freshman Jocelyn Zarling added 13 points.

Gourdin was named to the Classic All-Tournament Team as she averaged 20 points and 7.5 boards.

Coming up this weekend the Mavs open up RMAC play when they travel to play Colorado Christian on Friday and Metro State Saturday.
