Mavericks Reach RMAC Tournament Final
(Defeat CCU, WNMU, Fall to host Neb.-Kearney)


Mesa State women's tennis team reached the RMAC Championship final by sweeping Colorado Christian and Western New Mexico by the identical score of 5-0. MSC entered the tournament as the number 2 seed and faced the number 7 seed Cougars in round one. MSC defeated CCU by sweeping all three doubles matches and posting victories at number 1 and 2 singles.

In the semifinal round MSC faced number 6 seed Western New Mexico. The Mustangs upset number 3 seed CSU-Pueblo in the first round 5-3. The Mavericks again swept the doubles action and clinched the match with wins at number 1 and 2 singles.

Sunday's championship match opponent was number 4 seed and host, Neb.-Kearney. The Lopers upset the number 1 seed, Montana State Billings in the semifinals 5-1.

MSC fell behind 1-2 after the doubles portion of the match. MSC's number one team of Teri Mayeda and Kelsey Bottinelli defeated UNK's number 1 team by the score of 8-6. The Mavericks number 2 and 3 doubles team lost close contests, including an 8-6 defeat for the number 2 team of Kate Lowder and Victoria Sargent.

MSC needed to win four of the six singles matches to secure the RMAC 2008 title. MSC's number one singles player Teri Mayeda was victorious in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mary Outhwatie. Freshman Victoria Sargent won in straight sets at number 3 singles, defeating Marcelle Strydom, 6-3, 7-6. Senior Kyrstal Smith defeated Jenna Eichman 6-3, 7-6 for the Mavericks third singles victory. UNK won at number 6 singles to tie the match at 4-4. The dual came down to the final singles match of the day which the Lopers were able to pull out in a hard fought three set win at number 4 singles.
