Business Administration

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is designed to prepare students for the challenges of today's organizations, as well as, the business world of tomorrow.  The program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to compete in both the local and global business environments.  Additionally, the program allows for an emphasis in a specialized area such as management, marketing, finance, economics, landman/energy management, human resource management and travel, tourism, and commercial recreation management.

The BBA degree can be applied in various fields such as medicine, the arts, sports, and education.  In addition to positions in corporate America, nonprofit organizations like hospitals, school systems, and theaters also require people with business training and skills.  Graduates of BBA programs hold positions in organizations from entry level manager to chief executive officer.  Mesa State's BBA graduates are entrepreneurs, small business owners, bank vice-presidents, product managers in advertising firms, and project and operations managers in manufacturing organizations.

The BBA is a very versatile, flexible and valuable degree.  Many of Mesa State's BBA graduates have gone on to earn advanced degrees in business such as the Master of Business Administration - one of the most sought after degrees by employers in today's job market.

Bachelor of Business Administration Concentrations:

Have you ever wondered why the economy does what it does?  Have you ever wanted to be a Business Forecaster or Commodity Industry Forecaster?  A degree in Business Economics will give you the knowledge.

A concentration on Business Economics provides a student with a solid foundation in all of the fundamental areas of business and combines this with additional work in economic analysis.  Students acquire the ability to analyze forces that affect interest rates, incomes, foreign exchange rates, wage rates, employment and unemployment levels, inflation, recession, and the structure and competitiveness of firms and industries. Students also learn how to analyze the effects of public policy changes such as increases or decreases in government spending, taxes, and the money supply.

Past graduates have pursued many career paths including bank management, financial planning and advising, Governor's Office of Planning and Budget (Utah), capital acquisitions analyst for a major hospital, entrepreneurs/business owners.   They have also gone on to Graduate Schools to study Economics, Business, Labor and Industrial Relations and Law.

If you have always wanted to be a Chief Financial Officer, a Financial Planner, an Industrial Broker or Investment Counselor, a degree in Finance will pave the way.

Finance is alternatively defined as both the "art and science of managing money" and the "processes by which money is transferred among businesses, individuals, and governments."  An understanding of finance not only prepares students for a variety of interesting and rewarding careers, but also equips them to make better decisions as investors throughout their lives.  Virtually every business decision has financial implications and determining whether a particular decision will likely create value or destroy it is the underlying principle of the finance discipline.

Finance graduates are sought to fill a variety of positions that include Financial Analyst, Retail Bank Manager, Cash Manager, Trust Officer, Credit Analyst, Financial Planner, Loan Officer, Real Estate Appraiser, Stockbroker, Insurance Agent, Portfolio Manager, Underwriter, Mortgage Banker, Pension Fund Manager.

As the energy industry evolves, you can play a part in the search for pioneering solutions to global energy challenges. With the Landman/Energy Management program from Mesa State College, you'll be poised for success in the business side of the growing energy industry with countless job opportunities that can take you around the globe or keep you at home in Western Colorado. At Mesa State, you'll benefit from a dynamic, interdisciplinary curriculum taught by expert faculty and industry leaders. You'll have access to network with guest speakers who are at the forefront of the industry, site and facility tours that are second to none, and internship opportunities with global companies based in our region.

The human resource management concentration is designed to prepare students to understand the fundamental functions of HR:  Staffing, HR Development, Compensation & Benefits, Safety & Health, and Employee & Labor Relations.  Students should be able to identify activities and processes related to the HR functions that can be used to discern and diagnose problems, as well as provide potential solutions.  Student knowledge of employee & group performance-improvement are the ultimate goal of this concentration.

 

A concentration in Management will provide a student with a foundation in management for an organization. This involves achieving organizational goals or objectives by and through others.  There are generally three levels of management.  Each one involves two main components:general organizational abilities; including the ability to plan, organize, lead, and control; and specific skills involving conceptual, human relations, and technical.  This includes the ability to delegate, learning to take advantage of opportunities, and utilizing the resources available to accomplish the mission and the vision of the organization.

Since it has been said that all roads lead to management, careers in every field, including both product and services, can expect to need both entry level and advanced managers.

We all see advertising on television, in magazines and hear it on the radio.  If this area is interesting to you, these plus many more, including Television Shopping Channel Coordinator, are available to you when you receive a degree in Marketing.

A concentration in Marketing will provide the student with a strong foundation in the principles of Marketing which is the process of creating, distributing, promoting and pricing goods, services, and ideas to facilitate satisfying exchange relationships with customers in an ever changing environment.  Many very highly compensated and satisfying careers are found in this are of study.  Almost one-third of the civilian work force in the United States is employed in Marketing related jobs.  Example careers are as follows: marketing research, sales, industrial buying, public relations, distribution management, product management, advertising, retail management, and direct marketing

Does the world of travel appeal to you?  This degree will give you the knowledge to be a travel agent, tourism director, or lead the way to other travel related industry.
