Educational Access Services
Grievance Procedure
Educational Access Services has the responsibility for determining students' needs for accommodation. This determination is made through a two-part process of an intake interview and reviewing documentation of the disability. If the EAS Coordinator determines a student is eligible for accommodations, EAS is responsible for coordinating the accommodations.
If the student believes the accommodation(s) provided are not reasonable, the student should follow the procedure below. While the following time limits should not be exceeded, the goal is to accomplish each step as quickly as possible.
- The student will schedule a meeting with the EAS Coordinator to discuss the matter. If an accommodation is related to a specific course, the student's faculty member may be asked to attend the meeting.
- If the student is not satisfied with the outcome of the meeting, the student should make an appointment to meet with the Director of the Advising and Academic Services Department within five (5) working days from date of the meeting with the EAS Coordinator. The Director will review the matter, allowing all interested parties an opportunity to submit relevant information, statements and documentation. The Director will make a decision regarding the grievance within five (5) working days of the meeting with the student and attempt to notify the student immediately. Notice may be written, oral, telephone or electronic mail.
- If the student is not satisfied with the result of the meeting with the Director, the student can request an ADA Grievance form. This form should be completed and submitted to the Academic Affairs Office within ten (10) working days from the date of the student’s receipt of the decision.
- After the Academic Affairs Vice President or designee receives the grievance form, the Vice President will contact the Faculty Senate Vice President to convene a meeting of the ADA Grievance Committee and review the student grievance. The ADA Grievance Committee is an ad-hoc committee composed of at least three (3) faculty members and a representative from the Office of Student Services. This review may involve meeting with the student, staff from EAS, faculty, or other staff members. In filing an appeal with the ADA Grievance Committee, the student thereby gives the EAS Coordinator permission to release relevant information from the student's EAS documentation and file.
- The ADA Grievance Committee will make a final decision regarding the ADA grievance within ten (10) working days of receiving the ADA Grievance form with a recommendation to the Academic Affairs Office. This decision will be communicated to the student in writing, with a copy provided to Educational Access Services and other appropriate college faculty and staff by the Academic Affairs Office.
