Outlined below are a series of programs sponsored by the Office
Of Freshman Programs. All Mesa State College students are invited
to attend these programs.
Programs are scheduled for one hour or less.

Week # 1 / January 15 January 21
Making the grade
Build upon your present academic skills to better prepare yourself
for the rigors of college. Whether you a freshman, a transfer
student, or a returning student this program will help you prepare
for the spring semester.
Saturday January 15th from 11:00 AM noon in the Boettcher
Room of the College Center
Presented by Dr. Bill Horstman, Coordinator of Freshman Programs
Dont let time management blow you away
Attending college means making adjustments. One of the biggest
adjustments students need to make is in the area of time management.
Most students find out real fast that there is a lot to do, but
it seems as though there is very little time to do it. This program
will provide you with the tools needed to stay on time of your
time.

Week # 3 / January 24 January 28
Fun with FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
Its not too early to start thinking about financial aid
for next year. The first step in the process is that of completing
the FAFSA form. Learn the ins and outs of this process through
this program.

Week # 4 / January 31 February 4
Life Skills: Get a grip on your finances: smart spending
for students.
Using an interactive computer program students will have the opportunity
to develop a budget for the school year. As part of this planning
process students will begin to understand the differences between
financial needs and wants, in addition students will develop an
understanding of where their money goes to understand. Find out
how you can avoid both academic and legal problems.

Week # 5 / February 7 February 11
Registrar 101
Looks at the mission of the Registrar's Office from the perspective
of administrative functions, compliance issues and helping to
ensure student success. Some of the items discussed are registration,
add/drop, enrollment verification, veteran certification, transfer
evaluations, transcripts and degree audits. The upcoming implementation
of the College Opportunity Fund (COF) is also covered.

Know your rights
Students may not realize it, but they have certain and specific
rights in terms of personal information that can be shared and
with whom. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
outlines what information can and cant be shared. Attending
this program will clarify who knows what about you.

Week # 7 / February 21 February 25
The Student's Guide to Using the Cardio Equipment in the
Student Recreation Center
Learn how to get a great workout on your choice of 23 cardio machines
available to all students in the Student Recreation Center. Try
the new treadmills or new cross-trainers; the upright and recumbant
bikes; or the stairsteppers, rowers, and Nordic Tracks. A trained
staff person will help you find the machine and workout you want
to increase your fitness level.

Goal setting in college
Setting SMART goals, is an efficient way to achieve what you wish
to achieve in life. A big part of planning your schedule and to-do
list should be goal setting. If you dont know what your
goals are in life, you cannot set priorities. If you cant
set your priorities, how do you know what you need to do? Having
a plan can save lots of time because you focus on whats
important to you.

Dealing with math anxiety
Are you one of the many MSC students who consider math to be a
four-letter word? Does the thought of your first math class make
you tense and give you sweaty palms? If your answer was yes than
this program is for you. Spend an hour finding out ways to overcome
or at least deal with test anxiety. In addition, you will learn
about the many resources MSC provides to help you with your math
classes.

Dealing with test anxiety
Get ready for your pesky end of the semester exams. Just in time
for finals, a program considering various methods for approaching
test taking will be presented. Hear from a Mesa State College
administrator tips for taking college tests.

Planning for the fall 2004 semester Classes, Classes, Classes...What
is a student to do?
Current students have the privilege of registering early and that
time is quickly approaching. Do you know what classes you should
be taking and why? Do you need help making your schedule? Do you
know what day you register? Have you decided on a major? So many
questions and so little time. This is your opportunity to get
answers and the help you may need with your schedule.

Academics vs. Social Influences ~ Decision 101
As a student, do you find that when you should be doing homework
you are actually at the movies? Do you find that when your alarm
clock goes off at 8am, that you push snooze 5 times and then just
turn the alarm clock off and sleep through your 9am class? Are
you beginning to think that you are already playing catch up in
your classes?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Decision
101 is for you. There is a balance between academics and the social
influences, you just need to know when to say yes to each of them.
This session will give you some tips on maintaining your academics
as well teaching you why it is also important to have a life outside
the classroom.
