Academic Qualifications
Admission to Mesa State is considered Moderately Selective for our Bachelors degree programs. We also offer many Associates degree options with varying levels of selectivity. For students interested in our technical associates and certificate programs offered through WCCC(Western Colorado Community College) - selection is generally open.

The Colorado Commission on Higher Education has set up an index recommendation for students interested in earning bachelors degrees at Colorado colleges and universities. For students who are looking at Mesa State and are familiar with the index minimums - Mesa State considers students with a minimum of an 85 on the index. While the average index of students admitted to Mesa State is a 94 - all students with an index of 85 or higher are considered for baccalaureate programs, while students below the index will be considered for admission into associates and certificate programs.

We have an additional commitment to serving students from Mesa, Delta, Eagle, Garfield, Grand, Jackson, Moffat, Montrose, Ouray, Pitkin, Rio Blanco, Routt, San Miguel and Summit as their Regional Education Provider and are able to offer numerous options for study for those interested in higher education but have not achieved the above minimum index scores - these options include part -time, non-matriculated admission, coursework at the Montrose campus, provisional admission, limited coursework and admission with course requirements to assist in student success.

Application - The Mesa State application can be found on-line by clicking HERE. The application itself takes very little time to complete. If you choose to complete the application on-line you will need to print off the last page and send it (with your signature) by mail. Hard copy versions can also be used - they can be found in most high school guidance offices in Colorado or can be obtained by request on-line or by phone at 970-248-1875 or by calling 1-800-982-6372 toll-free.

$30 Application Fee - Your application to Mesa State requires an application fee of $30.00 which can be paid on-line with a credit card. You can certainly send a check or money order with the signature page instead if you wish.

Official High School Transcripts - Upon completion of your application for admission you should contact your high school guidance counselor to have an official copy of your high school transcripts sent to Mesa State. We will accept unofficial transcripts for preliminary consideration but official transcripts must be received before an official, non-provisional offer of admission can be made. Official transcripts must be received by the Admissions Office and must have been sent directly from the high school guidance office. Please do not hand carry them as they will not be accepted as official copies (even in sealed envelopes as they usually state on them that they have been issued to a student - thus making them unofficial).

College Entrance Tests - Mesa State requires either the SAT I or the ACT for admission consideration for bachelors and associate degree programs. No SAT 1 or ACT score is required for admission into our certificate programs. Mesa State offers a residual ACT for prospective students who have been unable to take the SAT 1 or the ACT and would like to enroll in either a bachelors or associates degree program. The residual ACT can only be used for admission to Mesa State and is offered through the Mesa State Testing Center twice a year. The ACCUPLACER exam is also an option for students who have NOT tested at the following levels for placement into college level math and English classes. We advise students to consider ACCUPLACER for better placement into classes. (and is also offered through the Mesa State Testing Center). (ACT - 19 or above for math, 18 or above for English, 17 or above for Reading) (SAT 1 - 460 or above for math, 430 or above for verbal and reading)

Letters of Recommendation (optional) - Mesa State does not require letters of recommendation. If letters are submitted they will be reviewed and considered in the admission of a student. Letters of recommendation are especially helpful for students who are concerned about their admissibility. Students who would like to submit letters of recommendation should submit those letters which address academic preparedness for college level work in their field of interest, work ethic, promise, and motivation. Students should also know that while a letter of recommendation can assist in the admissions process, the actual ADMISSION of a student is based upon a review of the ENTIRE application.

Essay (optional) - Although desirable - Mesa State does not require essays. Essays, however, provide a forum for students to tell us more about who they are, what is important to them and allows the admissions staff the opportunity to take special events in a prospective students life into consideration. This can also be especially helpful in the consideration of an applicant who has had a particularly difficult year for a variety of reasons. For those students who are concerned about their admissibility - an essay is HIGHLY encouraged and will be reviewed by the Admissions Review Committee and will likely have bearing on the admission for the student.

For those students who are admitted: Your next step is to attend a Student Orientation program. By attending a Student Orientation program, you are able to get one-on-one academic advising, register for classes and listen to sessions geared toward preparing you for what to expect in college.
