Community Service Opportunities

Some Mesa State College scholarships require that you perform community service hours. Your scholarship award letter tells you how many hours you need to perform (50 hours are typical). Community service is supervised volunteer work for organizations created to serve the general public. It is a chance for you to use your skills and talents while helping others in the community. When picking a place for community service, you may want to look for work related to your major.

Examples of unacceptable community service include:

  • Working for a friend
  • Working at a restaurant for free (a restaurant is a for profit organization)
  • Working anywhere for money
  • Working during the summer or after the spring semester has ended.

Examples of acceptable community service include volunteering at:

  • Hospitals
  • Senior centers
  • Daycare facilities
  • Police and fire departments
  • Federal, state or city government entities
  • Similar organizations created to serve the general public
  • Any agency listed below

You have until the last day of the spring semester to complete your hours and submit a letter typed on company letterhead, which includes your name, social security number, number of hours completed, and description of services performed. Your supervisor should sign the document. If you have any further questions, please call us at (970)248-1396.
