A conversation with Dr. Murray
What brought you to Mesa State? This is someplace
totally different for me. I had spent most of my life in
the South and the East. The West was a new opportunity and
experience. Now that I'm here, I love it. I enjoy what I
do and I love where I live.
What's your personal philosophy on educating students?
For me, education is about responsibility. We should be
teaching students how to think and how to be responsible
for their decisions. I believe that a student's choice of
classes is irrelevant. The crux of it is setting a goal
and achieving it.

As a faculty member you teach physical education,
but what areas are you most interested in... what's your
passion? I love sports history. I really enjoy reading
about the early Olympic games.
If you went back to college and could study anything
except physical education, what would you study?
I would probably major in history or law... but I think
I would still be a professor. I like teaching that much.
What do you do with your weekends? I hike,
run, ski, anything outdoors. I've run in more than 100 triathlons.
I don't race anymore, but I still enjoy getting out and
running.
