July 31, August 1 & 2, 2007

Mesa State College
Grand Junction, Colorado

Workshop Overview

The workshop is divided into three modules. All attendees will receive 1 CEU for each module participated.

Module 1 - Primer in ArcGIS
(July 31, 2007 from 8 AM to 4:30 PM)

This module is optional and will cover on the fundamental GIS concepts and the functionality available in ArcGIS using oil and natural gas datasets. This workshop is provided for people who do not have a high level of familiarity with GIS and the ArcGIS software applications.

Module 2-- GIS and the Public Meeting
(August 1 and 2, 2007 from 8-11:30 AM)

This module will include discussions of the potential use of GIS to facilitate the drilling permit process with the BLM or any other government agencies and public meetings surrounding the issue of energy development. GIS maps can be a tremendous advantage in conveying information to the public in an open forum setting. The morning session will focus on a discussion of how GIS can be used to better facilitate reporting by the Energy companies when they submit permit applications for development (drilling, pipelines, and reclamation plans). This workshop would be designed for those with working knowledge of and responsibility for GIS technology AND for those in management, environmental groups or federal agencies who would benefit from knowledge of the potential for GIS to help in the permit process. As such the morning workshop in Module 2 is designed for anyone who wishes to understand the potential uses of GIS in all aspects of the process.

Module 3 - Includes Module 2 and Hands-on Workshop
(August 1 and 2 from 8:00AM to 4:30 PM)

Includes all of Module 2 and the hands-on afternoon workshops. The afternoon workshop is designed for those who like to do hands-on ArcGIS applications of the examples and ideas generated from the morning discussions and would be geared toward those who are actually responsible for managing the GIS data and technology. Advanced topics on spatial datasets such as Digital Elevation Models, aerial photos, and GPS will also be covered.

All students in the GIS Workshops will receive the book: GIS Tutorial by ESRI, software, and hands-on tutorial workbooks.
