Mesa State Announces January Term

Grand Junction, CO - Mesa State College will provide students and community members with the opportunity to earn college credit and develop new skills during its inaugural January Term, an intensive two-week course session scheduled for Jan. 3-14, 2005.

"With 51 different courses, January Term will have options for current students looking to advance their degree completion programs, as well as community members who are interested in sampling the unique talents of the Mesa State faculty," said Heather Exby, Mesa State College's Director of Regional Programs. "The courses will also be open to students from other institutions home for the holidays who would like to complete a general education requirement and transfer the credit."

Designed specifically for the shorter term, the course offerings will include various topics in science, art and culture, health care, business and computing and personal wellness. One to three hours of college credit will be available for a number of the courses.

"We've got a great sampling of courses, including 'Cooking with Leftovers,' 'Introduction to Business,' 'The Lewis and Clark Expedition,' 'The Politics of Dr. Seuss' and so many more," said Exby. "We think there will be something of interest for everyone."

Registration for the January Term will begin on Nov. 1 and continue through Dec. 15. Individuals do not have to currently be enrolled at Mesa State College to participate. Instead, they can register by completing the "Application for Extended Studies - January Term." The application, a full list of courses and answers to frequently asked questions are available at www.mesastate.edu/january. Currently enrolled Mesa State students should register on-line or through the Registrar's Office.

"January Term represents Mesa State's commitment to being a good steward of people's time and of fully utilizing the college's available resources," said Tim Foster, president of Mesa State College. "This shortened term will allow students to jumpstart their spring semester and provide community members with the opportunity to explore a topic of interest without having to commit to a full semester of study."

The January Term is being facilitated through the Mesa State College Office of Extended Studies. For more information, contact Heather Exby, director of regional programs, at 970.248.1942 or hexby@mesastate.edu.
