Mesa State College's Cultural Diversity Board
to Host Unity Fest 2005
Grand Junction, Colo. - Committed to promoting cultural diversity
and understanding on campus and in the regional community, the Mesa
State College Cultural Diversity Board will host Unity Fest 2005.
The week-long celebration kicks off on Sunday, April 3 and continues
through Saturday, April 9.
"Unity Fest has been an annual tradition at Mesa State College
for more than a decade and it continues to grow with each passing
year," said Breanne Baptista, assistant director of the Cultural
Diversity Board. "Each day, one of the CDB's six organizations
will showcase the different culture they represent through food,
dance, music and other fun activities, all of which are open to
the public."
Unity Fest 2005 will include:
Sunday, April 3 - Unity Fest Kick-Off and Tsunami Relief Fundraiser
11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Live bands, Loaded.45 and The Grotto, and various
family events, including Bump N' Jump, face painting, balloon animals,
craft vendors and a car wash. Activities will take place in the
Rait/Tolman Quad and proceeds will go towards tsunami relief funds.
Monday, April 4 - P.R.I.D.E. Day
11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Finger foods, light refreshments and Bump N' Jump
in the Academic Quad.
Tuesday, April 5 - Black Student Alliance Day
11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Soul food sale, poetry readings and dance lessons
and performances in the Academic Quad.
6 p.m. - 9 p.m. "Showtime @ Mesa" talent show in the Moss
Performing Arts Center's Recital Hall.
Wednesday, April 6 - La Raza Hispanic Club Day
9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Barbeque food sale, piñatas for children,
eating contests, graffiti artists and dance performances by the
Aspen Ballet Folklorico and Trio, the Rated III break dancers and
the Matachines dance group. Activities will take place in the Academic
Quad.
6 p.m. - 7 p.m. Salsa dance lessons in the Campbell College Center's
Liff Auditorium.
7 p.m. - 9 p.m. "A Walk in the Clouds" movie in the Campbell
College Center's Bookcliff Café.
Thursday, April 7 - International Student Association Day
9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Korean and Nepali food sale in the Academic
Quad.
6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. An "International Evening," which
will include traditional dances and food from various countries,
in the Campbell College Center's Liff Auditorium.
Friday, April 8 - Native American Student Council Day
11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Ute Color Guard, Fort Lewis Choir and Navajo sand
painter in the
Academic Quad.
2 p.m. "Blackfire" movie and discussion in the Campbell
College Center's Liff Auditorium.
7 p.m. Free Spirit Music Festival, featuring Michael Jacobs, the
Pagosa Hot
Strings and Blackfire, in the Brownson Arena.
Saturday, April 9 - Ho'olokahi Polynesian Club Day
10:30 a.m. First Annual Ho'olaulea and Passport to Polynesia craft
sale and activities in the Rait/Tolman Quad.
5:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. Teriyaki chicken dinner plate and the Polynesian
Hula Show in Brownson Arena.
"The CDB does an excellent job of showcasing their passion
for diversity during Unity Fest," said Tim Foster, president
of Mesa State College. "It really is a great opportunity for
both students and community members to explore the tastes, sights
and sounds of other cultures without having to leave the Grand Valley."
All Unity Fest 2005 events are open to the public. Many events
are free, while others have minimal costs associated with them.
Tickets for the Native American Student Council's Free Spirit Music
Festival are $8 for MAVCard holders and $12 for the public, and
are available at the Mesa State College Bookstore. For additional

The student-led CDB strives to promote and support the ethnic and
cultural clubs on campus and provide on-campus educational support
services to recruit and retain minority students. In addition, the
CDB serves as an educational and cultural conduit to the Mesa State
College campuses and the regional community regarding culturally
diverse issues.
