Mesa State College to Observe Holocaust Awareness Weeks

Grand Junction, Colo. - Mesa State College will observe Holocaust Awareness Weeks from April 4-15 through a series of four interdisciplinary presentations that will illuminate Holocaust issues from the perspectives of history, political science and literature.

"Many forget that the Holocaust was not simply an organized political and social program to wipe out the European Jewish population; it was an effort by the Nazis to purify their "race" by destroying any elements of cultural or biological impurity that did not fit their images of themselves," said Dr. Vincent Patarino. "The Holocaust is a lesson on how the conceptions of nationalism and intolerance can be extrapolated to irrational ends; a lesson that is still important given the further movements of ethnic cleansing in the 1990s and the general intolerance we still find in American society."

The Holocaust Awareness Series will include:

"Alain Resnais' Night and Fog: the Banality of Evil and the Cyclical Nature of Genocide"
Tuesday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in Houston Hall 228
Dr. Vincent Patarino, lecturer of history, will present this documentary film along with a short background and discussion.

"Not Just the Nazis: How Other Countries Helped or Hindered the Holocaust"
Thursday, April 7 at 4 p.m. in Houston Hall 229
Dr. Elizabeth Proper, lecturer of history, will present this lecture and discussion.

"Representing the Holocaust: Tensions, Problems and Solutions"
Wednesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. in Houston Hall 130
Dr. Barry Laga, lecturer of English, will present this lecture and discussion.

"Ararat: Memories of Genocide"
Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m. in Houston Hall 130
Dr. Timothy Casey, lecturer of political science, will present this film, its background and hold a discussion on this topic.

Each of the presentations is free and open to the public. Co-sponsored by Phi Alpha Theta, a historical honor society, and the Mesa State College Social and Behavioral Sciences Department, 2005 marks the second year that the Holocaust Awareness Series is being offered.
