Mesa State College
World Wide Web Policy Statement
I. Purposes and Goals
1. Mesa State College's World Wide Web server has two purposes:
access and information.
Access
The Mesa State College web server is dedicated to providing access
to members of the College community to information from and about
Mesa State College; and providing access to a variety of scholarly
information resources.
Information
The Mesa State College web server is dedicated to providing information
to on-line visitors about Mesa State College's mission, programs,
services, faculty, students, and events.
2. This policy is intended to apply to members of the college community
making use of the Mesa State web servers. This group consists of
students, faculty and staff members of Mesa State and affiliated
entities involved with creating content for use on the Web. The
Web is a form of electronic publication with a potentially large
audience and is accessible from most countries throughout the world.
In this environment it is important that the College encourage high
standards of presentation of its web pages just as it seeks to ensure
that its printed products are also of a high standard. Mesa State
College is committed to the principles of freedom of speech and
expression that the World Wide Web offers, but that commitment must
be balanced by the College's interest that web pages published on
the web server reflect the goals and values of Mesa State College
as an institution of higher education.
II. Responsibilities of Web Publishers
1. The content of each web page is the sole responsibility of the
individual web publisher. Mesa State College can accept no responsibility
for the content of personal pages. Web publishers are responsible
for their content and must be aware of and comply with all relevant
federal and state laws.
2. To ensure that web pages reflect positively on Mesa State College,
all web pages may be periodically monitored. If a page appears to
conflict with the College's mission and values, or if the page violates
copyright or other federal or state law, that page may be subject
to immediate removal from the system. The web publisher will be
notified that specific pages are to be de-activated and will be
given an opportunity to appeal through appropriate channels to the
Office of Institutional Advancement.
3. Publishers on the World Wide Web are expected to read and comply
with the College's WWW Style Guide (http://www.mesastate.edu/info/webmaster/styleguide.htm).
Pages created should be consistent with those guidelines and any
links made to official Mesa State pages should generally follow
the standards established in the Style Guide.
III. Eligibility to Create Web Pages
1. Home pages linked to the Mesa State College Home Page or other
official Mesa State pages may be created by officially constituted
academic schools, departments, programs, centers or institutes,
administrative departments, or registered student organizations.
Each department shall select a web liaison who is responsible for
maintaining the departmental page.
2. Faculty, staff, and students may create personal home pages
for their own use. Faculty are encouraged to create course home
pages to enhance and supplement their academic offerings.
3. Other Mesa State College groups, educational organizations,
or local government agencies may request permission to use the Mesa
State College Web Server to publish their information. The Office
of Institutional Advancement will consider each request on a case-by-case
basis.
IV. Prohibited Usage
1. Mesa State does not permit the creation of commercial sites
hosted by the Mesa State server. Attempting to generate profit or
sales from areas allocated for personal usage is strictly prohibited.
Any violations may result in the termination of the user's account.
2. Mesa State strictly limits links to commercial sites and advertising
on the web site. Before attempting to add links to commercial sites
outside of the Mesa State context or for academic purposes, the
link must be approved by the Web Committee. External sponsorship
on pages and other advertising must be approved by the Web Committee
prior to implementation. Student-fee funded entities that maintain
sites on the Mesa State server may seek exception to this policy
on a case-by-case basis.
Any advertisement or pages containing the following will automatically
be rejected:
- Popup advertisements
- Banner advertisements
- Blinking advertisements
- Misleading information or navigation
- Links or information not appropriate for context of the page
or College mission
