SOFTWARE COPYRIGHT AND COMPLIANCE
POLICY
1) Mesa State College computer users shall use software in accordance
with the license agreement. Software used at MSC is licensed from
a variety of outside companies. MSC, unless authorized by the
software developer, does not have the right to reproduce software
or related documentation.
2) The unauthorized copying of software, which is licensed or
protected by copyright, is illegal. MSC reserves the right to
administer disciplinary and/or legal action as deemed appropriate.
3) No institutional-owned computer resources should be used for
unauthorized commercial purposes.
4) Respect for the intellectual work and property of others has
traditionally been essential to the mission of the State Colleges.
Plagiarism and the unauthorized copying of software including
program applications, databases, and code are forbidden. Employees
or students acquiring or using copies of computer software will
be disciplined as appropriate under the circumstances
.
5) Mesa State College recognizes its obligation to provide continuing
guidance as to what constitutes academic honesty, and to promote
procedures and circumstances that will reinforce this principle.
U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17) recognizes that intellectual work
such as software programs, data, or pictures are automatically
covered by copyright unless it is explicitly noted to the contrary.
According to U.S. Copyright Law, illegal reproduction of software
can be subject to civil damages of $50,000 or more on behalf of
the copyright owner; and criminal penalties including fines and
imprisonment.
