The first thing to do when your dial-up connection is not working is to verify that your password works in one of the computer labs on campus. If not, go to the computer lab in the Tomlinson Library to have it re-set. Bring a photo i.d. from 7:30 AM until 4:30 PM.

WINDOWS 95 SETUP FOR
CONNECTING YOUR PC TO THE INTERNET
USING MESA STATE'S PPP SERVER

Install Dial-Up Networking, if not already installed.

NOTE: Dial-Up Networking is already installed on later versions of Win95 and all version of Win98 so proceed to section below labeled Set up the connection to Mesa State's PPP server.

  1. Click Start
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Control Panel
  4. Click the Add/Remove Programs icon
    Select the Windows Setup tab
    Single-click Communications, then click the Details button
    There should be a check mark next to the Dial-Up Networking item. If the item is checked, exit by pressing Cancel on each box to return to the desktop. If you had to enter the check mark next to Dial-Up Networking, click on OK. You may be prompted to insert your Windows 95 CD-ROM or disks. Do so and click OK. Follow the directions on the screen to install Dial-Up Networking. When it asks for your computer identification, key in the following information:
    Computer Name: [type in your Novell login name; for example, dscott]
    Workgroup: windows
    Computer Description: [type in your full name; for example, Donna Scott]
    Initial communications programs and protocols, if not already installed

Click Start
Select Settings
Select Control Panel, then click on the Control Panel item
Double-click the Network icon
Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is shown as installed under the Configuration tab.
If it isn't
Click Add
Double-click Client
Click on Microsoft
Click on Client for Microsoft Networks
Click OK
You may be prompted for your Windows 95 CD-ROM or disks. If so, insert the CD-ROM or disk and click OK. Follow the directions on the screen to install the Client for Microsoft Networks.
Verify the Dial-Up Adapter is shown as installed under the Configuration tab.
If it isn't
Click Add
Double-click Adapter
Scroll down the list of Manufacturers and select Microsoft
Choose the Dial-Up Adapter and click OK
You may be prompted for your Windows 95 CD-ROM or disks. If so, insert the CD-ROM or disk and click OK. Follow the directions on the screen to install the Dial-Up Adapter.
Verify the TCP/IP protocol is shown as installed under the Configuration tab.
If it isn't
Click Add
Double-click Protocol
Select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers
Choose TCP/IP and click OK
You may be prompted for your Windows 95 CD-ROM or disks. If so, insert the CD-ROM or disk and click OK. Follow the directions on the screen to install the TCP/IP protocol.
Click OK in each window until you are asked to restart the system. After you restart, proceed to the next step. If you didn't need to install anything, close the open windows to return to the desktop.
Set up the connection to Mesa State's PPP server

Quick setup process for new Win98 PCs
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Make a New Connection -> Next -> Telephone number you are dialing into: 241-2209
Double-click on the new icon in the Dial-Up networking Window labeled "My Connection" then use your Novell login name and password when prompted. You should get a "Verifying Username and Password" message after dialing in. You should now be able to use your web browser to surf the Internet. If it works, you're done!
Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop
Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon
Click on Next> in the "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" window. (The "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" window will not appear if you have previously installed a networking connection. In that case, double-click the Make New Connections icon.)
Type in Mesa State for the name of the computer you are dialing
Your modem should already be displayed in the box below "select a modem." If it isn't, double-click on the Control Panel icon in the "My Computer" window, double-click on the Modems icon, click the Add button, then follow the directions in the "Install New Modem" window.
Click on the Configure button to verify the settings.
Under the General tab, set the Maximum Speed to 115200 for a 56 kbps or 33.6 kbps modem, 57600 for a 28.8 kbps modem, or 38400 for a 14.4 kbps modem.
Under the Connection tab, set Data Bits to 8, Parity to None, and Stop Bits to 1.
Under the Options tab, enter a check mark next to "Display modem status." All other option boxes should be blank.
Click OK, then click Next>
Type in 970 241-2209 as the phone number to call if you have a 56 kbps modem; otherwise, type in 970 255-0740 as the phone number to call for a 33.6, 28.8, or 14.4 kbps modem.
Click Next>
The final setup box will tell you a new Dial-Up Networking connection called Mesa State has been created. Click Finish, as directed.
In the Dial-Up Networking window, select the Mesa State icon and click with the RIGHT mouse button, then click (left mouse button) on the Properties item in the pop-up menu.
In the Phone Number section, make sure the "Use country code and area code" option is NOT checked
Click the Server Type button
The Type of Dial-Up Server should be set to PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet
In the Advanced Options Section, make sure
"Log on to network" is NOT checked
"Enable software compression" is checked
"Require encrypted password" is NOT checked
TCP/IP should be the only protocol enabled. Disable NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible
Click on the TCP/IP Settings button and make sure the following settings are entered:
"Server assigned IP address" is selected
"Server assigned name server addresses" is selected
"Use IP Header Compression" is selected
"Use default gateway on remote network" is selected
Click OK in each window until you get back to the Dial-Up Networking window
Close the Dial-Up Networking window by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the box
Double-click the Control Panel icon in the My Computer window
In the Control Panel window, double-click the Internet icon (a globe)
Click on the Connection tab and make sure that a check mark is in the box next to "Connect to the Internet as needed" and that Mesa State is selected as the Dial-Up Networking connection.
Click OK to close the Internet Properties window, then close the Control Panel window by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the box. Leave the My Computer window open on the desktop for the next step.
Testing your dial-up connection to Mesa State

Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon in the My Computer window
Double-click on the Mesa State icon in the Dial-Up Networking window
When the "Connect To" window comes up, key in your login name (in lower-case letters) as username (don't press the <enter> key yet)
Press the Tab key to go to the Password box. Carefully key in your password.
Tab to the Save password box and put a check mark in it
If you are dialing from one of the on-campus dorms, click on the Dial Properties button, then enter 9, in the box following "To access an outside line, first dial:" (Note: The comma after the 9 creates a brief pause to get a dial ton e before the number is dialed.) Then click OK.
Click on the Connect button
You should hear your modem dial next. A pop-up dialog box titled "Connecting to Mesa State" will appear.
The pop-up box will notify you that the server is verifying your user name and password, then will change to a window titled "Connected to Mesa State"
Congratulations! You successfully connected to Mesa State's PPP communications server. Click on the Disconnect button to close your connection, then close the windows on the desktop before proceeding with installation of Netscape Navigator (or another browser). If you had problems connecting, go through the setup procedure again and make sure you keyed in everything exactly as shown.
Install Netscape Navigator

In order to visit a web site, you must have a browser. Web sites are best viewed with Netscape Navigator. You may already have it installed on your machine, and you can proceed to the next section. If you do not have it installed, do so by inserting your first disk or CD, and running setup. If you do not have a copy of Netscape, it can be downloaded freely from their Web Site. All Windows 95/98 machines have Microsoft Internet Explorer pre-installed. After you have established your dial-up connection, you can use Internet Explorer to freely download Netscape.
At the address bar, type http://www.netscape.com. When you get to their site, look for a download button, or borrowers button, and pick the browser that best suits your system requirements.
Open Netscape Navigator and connect to Mesa State

Double-click on the Netscape Navigator icon on the desktop to open your browser software
Click on the Connect button in the "Connect To" dialog box that appears
Wait for your modem to dial in and connect to Mesa State
A pop-up window will appear notifying you that the server is validating your login name and password, then notifying you that you are being logged into the server. Finally, a box will appear with the title "Connected to Mesa State"
Configure Netscape Navigator

Once Netscape Navigator is loaded, select "Options" from the menu bar at the top, then select the "General Preferences" item
Select the "Appearance" tab and enter the following information:
Set the Startup to launch either Netscape Browser or Netscape Mail, as you prefer
In the box for Home Page Location, type in http://www.mesastate.edu in place of http://home.netscape.com
Select the "Apps" tab
In the box next to Telnet Application, type in c:\windows\telnet.exe
Click OK
Select "Options" from the menu bar at the top again, then select the "Mail and News Preferences" item
Select the "Servers" tab and enter the following information:
For Outgoing Mail [SMTP] Server, type in mesastate.edu
For Incoming Mail [POP3] Server, type in mesastate.edu
For POP3 User Name, type in your login name (for example, dscott)
For News [NNTP] Server, type in news.mesastate.edu
Select the "Identity" tab and enter the following information:
Type in your full name next to Your Name
For Your Email, type in your e-mail address (for example, dscott@mesastate.edu)
For Reply-to Address, type in your e-mail address again (same as above)
For Your Organization, type in Mesa State College
Select the "Organization" tab
Click on the box for "Remember Mail Password" to put a check mark in it
[Note: The first time you open your e-mail box, you will have to key in your account password. After that, you won't have to key it in again.]
Click OK
Click on the icon that looks like a little envelope in the lower right corner of the Netscape Navigator window to open your e-mail box. Click on the X in the upper right corner of your mailbox window to return to the browser window.
