MacOS and PPP at Mesa State College

Here's how I connect to Mac's PPP server using my Mac running OS9 and with Open Transport installed.

Configure the TCP/IP Control Panel

1. From the Apple Menu, open the control panel "TCP/IP."
2. Choose File-> Configurations...
3. Click once on Default (or other, if necessary) then click "Duplicate." Give
the new setting file the name of "MSC PPP Connection" and press return. This
should now appear in the window. Click on it once, then click "Make Active."
4. At the TCP/IP window, set "Connect via" to PPP, "Configure" to "Using PPP
Server." In the "Name server addr.:" box enter the address 192.70.203.2. In
"Search domains:" enter the address "mesastate.edu", then close the TCP/IP
Control Panel, saving if necessary.

Configure the Modem Control Panel

1. From the Apple Menu, open the control panel "Modem."
2. Set "Connect via:" to the appropriate port (usually "Modem Port").
3. Under "Setup" select your modem's name from the pop-up menu.
4. Close the Modem control panel, saving if necessary.

Configure the PPP Control Panel

1. In the "Connection" box, set "Registered User" and enter your username and
password for logging onto your Novell account. Check the "Save password" box. In the
"Number" box, enter the phone number 241-2209.
2. Click on "Options..." then "Connection" tab. Check automatic connect when
starting TCP/IP applications. All others should be unchecked.
3. Click on "Protocol" tab and check error correction and modem compression,
but uncheck "Connect to a command line host." Close the PPP control panel,
saving if necessary.

At this point, anytime a TCP/IP application (Netscape, Eudora, Telnet, Fetch,
etc.) is launched, the computer should automatically dial and try to connect to
the server.
