Enrollment reaches 3,497

Cabbage Patch dolls become wildly popular.

Madonna releases her first album.

Soviets shoot down Korean Airlines passenger plane.

Smoking banned in college buildings

Mikhail Gorbachev becomes general secretary of the Communist Party in the U.S.S.R.; asks for economic reforms, better consumer products.

New library (later named for John Tomlinson) opens

Intensive English program established; Japanese students dominate

Random drug testing of Mesa athletes begins

President Tomlinson named interim president of the State College System

Beer sales terminated in the college center

Mesa´s Phi Alpha Theta chapter wins "Best Chapter" award

Mavericks win fourth straight RMAC volleyball title -- football team wins third straight title

Campus appearances: Helen Waterford, concentration camp survivor; Alfons Heck, ex-Nazi; Charles Scott, Iran hostage; Jeff Greenfield, media commentator

Soviet Secretary Gorbachev and President Reagan sign the INF treaty to reduce nuclear stockpiles.
