World celebrates the new millennium.

Football - RMAC Champions, Coach Ramunno Voted Conference Coach of the Year

Mesa State develops 3+2 program where students can complete a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration in 5 years.

Mesa State Foundation celebrates 40th anniversary.
The foundation offers more than 300 scholarships that range from $300 per year to full ride.

Homeland Security Department created to combat terrorism.

Women's Basketball wins the RMAC championship, ranked second, nationally in rebound margin and fourth in field goal percentage defense.

Mesa State enrollment tops 5,555

Moss Performing Arts CenterOctober 30, 2002
Mesa State announces naming of the Moss Performing Arts Center. The new name honors the longtime support Mesa State has received from John and Angie Moss. The Moss Performing Arts Center houses the William S. Robinson Theatre, the newly remodeled Walter Walker Reception Area, new student practice rooms, a recital hall, and an experimental ("black box") theater. A large community open house with a formal dedication will be held in 2003.

Governor signs bill granting independence to MSC

The Trustees of the State Colleges of Colorado, which had overseen the three colleges for many years, will be dissolved, and the Office of State Colleges in Denver will be closed.
Effective July 1 of this year each of the three colleges will be supervised by independent boards made up of individuals appointed by the governor. These boards will work directly with the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and the Colorado General Assembly.

Space Shuttle Columbia breaks apart during reentry from space.

United States invades and topples Saddam Hussein's Iraq.


2004

Mesa State's Men's and Women's tennis teams 2004 RMAC champions.

Head football coach, Joe Ramunno, selected as regional coach of the year for Division II by the AFCA. Ramunno with a six-year career record of 43-26 at Mesa State.

Head baseball coach, Chris Hanks, voted regional co-coach of the year. Hanks led the Mavericks to a region high and a school record, 44 victories.

The Harlem Globetrotters and New York Nationals entertained the Grand Junction community at Brownson Arena in April.

May 10, 2004
Governor Bill Owens signed Senate Bill (SB) 189 making Colorado the first state in the nation to provide voucher-based funding for postsecondary students (public and private)
.

Mesa State and UTEC announced the addition of an associate's degree in nursing program that will start Spring 2005.

President Tim Foster assumes leadership of Mesa State. Tim Foster

Richard E. Baca retires from Mesa State. Baca, who started at Mesa College in 1972, saw the College grow from a two-year community college to a comprehensive, four-year institution. Holding a variety of positions throughout his career at the College, he finished as the assistant vice president of student affairs and enrollment management.

Mesa State College receives critical maintenance funds from the Colorado State Legislature's Capital Development Committee.

May
Mesa State honors largest graduating class during 2005 commencement ceremony. Seven hundred of the 868 eligible students participated in the ceremony.

June
Mesa State breaks ground on the new Ken W. Nesbitt Construction Education Center at the Tilman M. Bishop Campus.

July
Mesa State begins Elm Avenue Reconstruction project

September
Mesa State breaks ground for a new $11.7 million residence hall that is to house 288 students.

October
Mesa State College celebrates its 80th Anniversary

November
The Mesa State College Cycling Team took fourth place in the Collegiate National Championships, placing in the top five overall in the Division I category for the fourth consecutive year.

On August 29, Hurricane Katrina's storm surge breached the levee system that protected New Orleans from Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. Most of the city was subsequently flooded by water from the lake. Heavy damage was also inflicted onto the coasts of Mississippi and Alabama, making Katrina the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States and the deadliest since the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane.
