Completed
in 1940, Houston Hall was the first building on the Mesa campus.
The building marked the move of the College from a mix of city,
county, and private buildings in the downtown area. Originally called
"Old Main", the building was rededicated and named for
former Junior College Dean Clifford Houston. Today, this building
houses the bulk of Mesa State College´s business, humanities,
and social science classrooms.
Dr. Houston guided Mesa Junior College through its roughest period
from 1931 to 1937. This time was marked by a complete lack of state
funding and support. Dr. Houston was faced with the daunting task
of keeping Mesa alive, when failure lurked around every bend. For
his dedication, Houston Hall stands today in honor of that commitment.

The history of this junior college is characteristic of
the community and county. It is a story of struggle, hardship, and
sacrifice. ... This is your college - you can do with it as you
will. You are not dominated or controlled by any state or any other
agency. You can shape the college to the needs of your children.
