Tomlinson Library is named in honor
of Mesa´s 7th President, Dr. John U. Tomlinson.
Tomlinson took the helm at Mesa on July 1, 1975. He
came to Mesa from St. Cloud, Minnesota, where he was
Academic Vice President. Tomlinson led Mesa´s
transition from a two-year institution to a four-year
bachelor´s degree granting institution. He also
oversaw one of Mesa´s largest growth periods during
his 14 years as president. John Tomlinson retired at
the end of 1988.

Founded in 1925 as Grand Junction
Junior College, the college´s first collection had
less than 2,000 volumes. There was no librarian and the
collection was held in a locked case in the dean´s
office. In 1933 a professional librarian, Lillian Sabin,
was hired and a library was organized at the college´s
first building in downtown Grand Junction. Grants from
Hattie Pierson Murr and the Carnegie Foundation helped
the library grow to 7,000 volumes by 1940. The Murr Library
operated from 1940 to 1967, when the library collection
topped 20,000 volumes. In 1966 the Lowell Heiny Library
(now Lowell Heiny Hall) was built.
It operated until 1986, when the current building was
completed. Upon John U. Tomlinson´s retirement,
the library was named in his honor. |
