Library Users Manual
The library staff is here to assist you in meeting your informational
needs for papers, speeches, research projects, or simply finding
an answer to a question that interests you. We also encourage you
to use the Library as a study facility but ask that you be considerate
of your fellow students who are sharing this study space.
This page was developed to answer some of your questions about
the Library holdings and services. If you do not find what you need,
please ask a library staff member for assistance.
General Rules and Policies of the Library are:
- Food is not allowed in the building.
- Non-alcoholic beverages are permitted in closed, spill proof
mugs or plastic bottles with secure lids.
- Use of tobacco in any form is prohibited in the building.
- Anyone bringing children into the building is responsible for
their actions and behavior. The Library cannot assume responsibility
for the safety of unattended children.
- Inappropriate behavior will result in removal from the building.
- The mutilation, destruction, or theft of any library property
is prohibited and will be subject to disciplinary action as described
in Colorado Revised Statutes #24-90-117 and #18-4-509.

Catalog
- Contains records for books, media, government publications,
and periodicals owned by the Library
- Web based and accessible from the Tomlinson Library homepage
- Available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- Library catalog records can be downloaded, e-mailed, or printed
through any existing web connection.
Searching for library material
Locating materials in the building
- Books - need both call number and location
- Arranged by Library of Congress Classification System
- Location Main: A - M on 2nd floor across the atrium
- Location Main: N - Z on 3rd floor across the atrium
- Location New Books: A - Z on 2nd floor
- Location Special Collections: A - Z on 3rd floor
- Location Reference Collection: A - Z on 1st floor
- Location Audio Books: A - Z on 2nd floor
- Location Bestsellers: Alphabetical by author on 2nd floor
- Juvenile collection
- Arranged by the Dewey Decimal Classification System
- Call numbers start with either JuvF or Juv
- Housed on 2nd floor to the right at the head of the stairs

- Items received in paper are housed on 3rd floor
- Items received on microfiche are housed on 2nd floor

- Arranged alphabetically by title and format on 2nd floor
- Current issues of newspapers and popular magazines are in
the Browsing Area on 2nd floor
- Popular Movies
- Shelved by accession number on top of Bestseller shelves
- 5-day loan period
- Media (videos, CDs, etc.)
- Shelved by accession number behind the Circulation Desk
- May be used in the library only
- To obtain, take the media call number to the Circulation
Desk

Checking-out materials
- I.D. REQUIRED
- Students, faculty, and staff must have MAV cards
- Graduate students enrolled in Western Colorado Graduate
Center programs (WCGC) must have current I.D. from the institution
offering the class/program
- MSC Alumni must have a current alumni card and picture I.D.
- Non-students must have either a Colorado Library Card (CLC)
or a Friends of the Library card (FOL) and be a Colorado resident
with a current government issued picture I.D. FOL cards require
a minimum donation of $25 and CLC cardholders must be currently
registered with participating libraries.

- Loan periods
- LC books from the Main collection, juvenile books, &
paper government publications check out for 21 days and may
be renewed once for an additional 21 days if no hold has been
placed on them.
- Books may be renewed online. Go into the Library
Catalog and click on View Your Record. Type in your name
and the 408# at the bottom of your MAV card. Choose Renew
All or Selected Items. One renewal (either in person or online)
allowed on books but none on media items.
- Reserve material checkout
periods vary according to the designation established
by the faculty member placing them on reserve. Only currently
enrolled students may access reserve materials.
- Some library materials are limited to in-library use only.
Reference books, Special Collection materials, media, and
periodicals are examples. Anyone may use these materials as
long as library rules and policies are observed. Media items
may be used in the Library for 2 hours.
- Fines: The Library has 2 fine schedules - one for circulating
materials and one for reserve materials.
- Circulating materials (books
& documents)
- No fine if returned within 5 days after item due
- $.25 per day with maximum of $10 (day 6 = $1.50)
- Lost book charge = $100 plus fine
- Reserve materials
- $.50 per hour with maximum of $50
Online Renewals of Library
Materials
- Go to the MSC Library web site - http://www.mesastate.edu/msclibrary/index.htm
- Click on the Find Books, Videos, etc. link.
- In the Library Links column (right side) click on the View
your Record link.
- In the text box type in your name as it appears on your MavCard.
- Type in your 408 Library number from the bottom left of your
MavCard.
- Click the Submit button.
- In the blue links box, click on the first link that states "n
items checked out," where n is the number of items
you have checked out.
- In the renew column (left side) of the blue "items checked
out" table, use the check boxes to select the items you want
to renew (or us the Renew All button if you wish to
renew all checked out items).
- Click the "Renew Selected Items" button.
- Make sure the due date is correct in the fourth column of the
blue "items checked out" table.
- Click the Logout button in the upper left hand portion of the
screen to finish.
- Only one renewal per book is allowed.
- Media can not be renewed.
Bishop Campus (WCCC) and Montrose Center Delivery
To have Library Materials Delivered to Your Site from the MSC Library:
- Start at the Mesa State College Library homepage and click on FIND BOOKS OR Type in the Mesa State College Library Catalog URL:
http://www.millennium.marmot.org/search~S18
- Search the catalog to find the item you want.
- Click the “Request.” Button on the Marmot Library Network tool bar.
- Enter your name and your 408 Library Card number.
- Choose your pickup location from the drop-down menu.
- MSC Bishop Campus OR
- MSC Montrose Center
- Click “Submit.” and a message will indicate a successful request.
You will be contacted when the material arrives at your site.
- Bishop Campus (WCCC) patrons will pick up their items at A117
- Montrose Center patrons will pick up their items at the center’s administrative office
- Present your MavCard to site staff for materials’ check out.
- Return materials to site staff by the due date.
CAUTION: Please plan ahead to allow for transport time. The times listed below
are considered minimums and do not account for time needed to locate the item.
- MSC Tomlinson materials to Bishop Campus (WCCC) —allow 1-2 working days
- MSC Tomlinson materials to MSC Montrose Center—allow 2-3 working days

Searching
online from home
- Access to the Library
Catalog is open to all.
- Access to the Library's licensed Indexes
& Databases is restricted to MSC students, faculty, and
staff. Use the Remote Access
page on the Library web site and your MAVCard (easiest method)
or log your computer on to the MSC network with a dial-up modem
and click on the database of your choice from the alphabetic
list.
