Standard Core
The degree provides the foundations necessary for success in all areas of business. Specific courses in concentration areas allow students further in-depth study in a concentration area.
Concentration Areas
Concentration areas allow students to specialize in the following areas of interest.
Business Economics
A concentration in Business Economics provides a student with a solid foundation in all of the fundamental areas of business and combines this with additional work in economic analysis. Students acquire the ability to analyze forces that affect interest rates, incomes, foreign exchange rates, wage rates, employment and unemployment levels, inflation, recession, and the structure and competitiveness of firms and industries. Students also learn how to analyze the effects of public policy changes such as increases or decreases in government spending, taxes, and the money supply.
Past graduates have pursued many career paths as the following examples show: bank management, financial planning and advising, Governor´s Office of Planning and Budget (Utah), capital acquisitions analyst for a major hospital, entrepreneurs/business owners. They have also gone on to Graduate Schools to study Economics, Business, Labor and Industrial Relations and Law.
Finance
Finance is alternatively defined as both the "art and science of managing money" and the "processes by which money is transferred among businesses, individuals, and governments." An understanding of finance not only prepares students for a variety of interesting and rewarding careers, but also equips them to make better decisions as investors throughout their lives. Virtually every business decision has financial implications and determining whether a particular decision will likely create value or destroy it is the underlying principle of the finance discipline.
Finance graduates are sought to fill a variety of positions that include Financial Analyst, Retail Bank Manager, Cash Manager, Trust Officer, Credit Analyst, Financial Planner, Loan Officer, Real Estate Appraiser, Stockbroker, Insurance Agent, Portfolio Manager, Underwriter, Mortgage Banker, Pension Fund Manager and many others.
Management
Management is the process of running an organization. This involves achieving organizational goals or objectives by and through others. There are generally three levels of management. Each one involves two main components: general organizational abilities; including the ability to plan, organize, lead, and control; and specific skills involving conceptual, human relations, and technical. This includes the ability to delegate, learning to take advantage of opportunities, and utilizing the resources available to accomplish the mission and the vision of the organization.
Since it has been said that all roads lead to management, careers in every field, including both product and services, can expect to need both entry level and advanced managers.
Marketing
Marketing is the process of creating, distributing, promoting, and pricing goods, services, and ideas to facilitate satisfying exchange relationships with customers in an ever changing environment. Many very highly compensated and satisfying careers are found in this area of study. Almost one-third of the civilian work force in the United States is employed in Marketing related jobs. Example careers are as follows: marketing research, sales, industrial buying, public relations, distribution management, product management, advertising, retail management, and direct marketing.
Travel, Tourism & Commercial Recreation
