Auto-Tutorial Learning Center
and Nursing Labs

The ATL and three Nursing Labs offer students the opportunity to learn and practice nursing skills in a non-threatening environment before going to clinical settings in the community. The ATL is also available for quiet study and for small group projects.

The ATL has two sections where students may learn and practice:

  • The media section, which has audiovisual learning aids in VCR, computer formats and books. This room is also available for study, meetings etc.
The Auto-Tutorial Learning Center (ATL) is located in Medesy 141
Students studying in the combined the auto-tutorial learning center.
  • The other section is the lab with equipment to practice skills. This area is kept locked when not in use, but will be opened upon request for practice unless set up for a special purpose. The labs also have seminar rooms and space for quiet study and special projects.

Nursing Labs are located in
Medesy 171-175.
  • The ATL is staffed by one faculty person and by work-study students. Typically, some of the students are nursing students and have survived the first semester of nursing school.

HOURS
Hours are posted. Other times can sometimes be arranged. The ATL is closed all student holidays and during the summer.

ORIENTATION
On your first day of nursing classes you will be oriented to the ATL. Be sure to ask questions of the staff any time you need help.

TELEPHONE
There is a telephone in the ATL. Dial "9" for an outside line. It may be used for very short local calls, especially to clinical sites and similar calls. Incoming calls will not be taken except in dire emergency. The cards completed on the first day of classes are to help locate you in case of an emergency call.

CONDUCT
The purpose of the ATL is to facilitate learning. Users are expected to promote a quiet, calm area. If a group needs to discuss a subject and this becomes annoying to other students, separate places will be found. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner while in the ATL. Cheating, plagiarism, stealing, rudeness, littering and leaving the practice areas in disarray etc. are unacceptable.

SMOKING, EATING AND DRINKING
This is a state owned building; therefore, there will be no smoking in the building. Because of the nature of the equipment, the "no eating or drinking" policy will be enforced in the ATL as posted.

EQUIPMENT
Equipment in the ATL is very expensive. It is there to use but please be careful. Some equipment needed for a specific clinical experience may be checked out for a period of time to be negotiated at the time of check out. Some equipment may be checked out for practice overnight or over a weekend. It MUST be available in the lab when the lab is open.

Videotapes can be placed in the library for viewing when the ATL is closed. Videotapes may not be taken home.

Books may be checked out over night or over the weekend. They must be available for use in the lab when the lab is open.

Most equipment is only available to be used in the lab. In order to provide multiple learning experiences, equipment (which would be disposable in the clinical setting) is used many times. Please save caps, wrappers, etc.

Some equipment will be issued to individual students. The student will be responsible for having this equipment in all classes where it will be needed. It must be reused as needed. The sign-out of equipment must be approved by the ATL Coordinator at all times.

The ATL Coordinator must keep statistics on lab use. Please sign in and out any time you use the lab. Also, when using electronic media, please indicate what you are using (by V# or computer program etc.) This information is helping in keeping the ATL as up-to-date as possible.

Do use the ATL. It is a learning resource. If you have problems, i.e. you cannot find something, or there is too much noise, please let the lab aides or the ATL Coordinator know and someone will help you.

FEES
Equipment for the ATL and nursing labs is purchased with student lab fees, as generated by the amounts listed in the course scheduling booklet beside each nursing lab/clinical course.

TUTORIALS
The ATL Coordinator will be happy to do small group tutorial sessions before check offs begin and at other times as needs arise, such as required procedure practices. Do ask for help with your skill performance problems. Do not wait for your instructor to send you back for practice. If you feel it has been a long time since you practiced some skill, you are encouraged to come and practice again.
