July
22, 2008 is the deadline to apply for priority consideration
for acceptance into the fall EMT-Basic program (beginning August,
2008.) Applications received after that date will be considered
on a space availability basis.
The EMT-Basic, also known as EMT-1, represents the first component
of the emergency medical technician system. An EMT-B is trained
to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting
patients by ambulance to the hospital under medical direction.
EMT-Basic course work typically emphasizes emergency skills, such
as patient assessment, managing respiratory, trauma, and cardiac
emergencies. Formal courses are combined with skills practice and
time in an emergency room or ambulance for a total of 195 contact
hours. The program also provides instruction and practice in dealing
with bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, cardiac arrest, and
emergency childbirth. Students learn how to use and maintain common
emergency equipment, such as backboards, suction devices, splints,
oxygen delivery systems, and stretchers.
Graduates of approved EMT-Basic training programs who pass a written
and practical examination administered by the State certifying agency
or the NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians)
earn the title "Registered EMT-Basic". The course is also
a prerequisite for the new EMT-Paramedic training program.
Required EMT-Basic Courses (10 semester hours)
EMTS 101 - EMS Basic I - 3 credit hours
EMTS 102 - EMS Basic II - 3 credit hours
EMTS 103 - EMS Basic III - 4 credit hours
EMT-Basic classes will be held at Western Colorado Community College,
2520 Blichmann Avenue, Grand Junction, Colorado, Building "B",
room 145. The class schedule is Tuesday and Thursday evenings
from 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. There will be several all-day
Saturday and Sunday sessions during the course of the program.
We encourage all students to apply, but be aware that students
are admitted contingent upon their passing a criminal background
investigation that is conducted at the expense of the applicant.
