The EMT-Paramedic represents the highest
standard level of training of the emergency medical service system.
At this level, the caregiver receives extensive training in the
use of advanced procedures, medications, and equipment to manage
medical emergencies and traumatic injuries in patients of all ages.
Through careful patient assessment and team oriented medical care,
the goal is to prevent and reduce mortality and morbidity due to
illness and injury. Paramedics primarily provide care to emergency
patients in the pre-hospital setting and may also provide advanced
care during transports by ambulance between medical facilities.
This program prepares the graduate to take the NREMT
(National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) examination
and become certified as an EMT-Paramedic. Extensive related course
work, clinical, and field experience is required. Part of this experience
will take place in a high patient volume metropolitan area under
specified preceptors. Embedded into this program are five certification
courses: PEPP - Pediatric Emergencies for Pre-Hospital Providers,
ACLS - American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support,
TBI - Traumatic Brain Foundations-Traumatic Brain Injury Management
Course, PHTLS - Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, and AMLS - Advanced
Medical Life Support.
Students admitted to the program must have and maintain EMT-Basic
or EMT-Intermediate certification throughout the EMT-Paramedic program.
Admission to the Paramedic program is competitive. Paramedics, like
all EMS providers should be emotionally stable, have good dexterity,
agility, and physical coordination, and be able to lift and carry
heavy loads.
EMT-Paramedics are employed by fire, police and rescue agencies,
hospitals, private ambulance companies and in a variety of business
and industries with a high potential for accidental injury or illness.
We encourage all students to apply, but this program has selective
admission requirements which include a criminal background investigation
that is conducted at the expense of the applicant.
