It is the goal of the baccalaureate degree program that students
will emerge with well-developed faculties for critical judgment
and analytical thought, as well as an awareness of their world.
In the college environment, students are expected to embrace some
of the great ideas and expressions of creative energy which characterize
the human condition. Specifically, a baccalaureate education emphasizes
four areas of cultural achievement:
- the origins and structure of modern society,
- the enduring ideas which have iinspired mankind through the
ages,
- the scientific world view and its impact on technology, and
- the expression of the creative spirit in literature and fine
arts.
Mesa State College reaffirms these ideals. They are ancient goals
tested through the centuries in a tradition which harks back to the
earliest universities. Their contemporary expression at Mesa State
College will strengthen the foundation of all academic programs.
Credit. All baccalaureate students must achieve a cumulative
grade point average of 2.00 or higher for all courses taken. In
addition, all English majors must maintain at least a 3.0 average
in their upper division English courses.
Degree Requirements. The B.A. in English offers three concentrations.
This site provides the specific degree requirements for each of
these concentrations: Literature, Writing,
and Teaching. However, students should
work closely with their faculty advisors and obtain a program sheet
from the advisor or academic dean at the time they begin their baccalaureate
degree program at Mesa State College. All degree requirements, as
agreed upon, will be included on the program sheet.
Residency. To receive a baccalaureate degree from Mesa
State College, students must complete a minimum of 28 semester hours
of credit in no fewer than two semesters of study at Mesa State
College with at least 15 semester hours in major discipline courses
numbered 300 or higher.
Double Concentration Within a Degree. Students wishing
to receive a double concentration within one degree must satisfy
all the requirements for each concentration. Only one degree will
be awarded. All concentrations desired must be declared on the petition
to graduate.
Second Baccalaureate Degree. A student seeking a second
baccaluareate degree at Mesa State College must earn a minimum of
30 additional semester hours of credit, at least 18 of which must
be in courses numbered 300 and higher. None of these 30 credits
may have been used toward another baccalaureate degree, and all
must be earned at Mesa State College. In addition, the student must
satisfy all specific program requirements of the new degree and
concentration as well as any graduation requirements not previously
met. Students with a baccalaureate degree from another institution
who are pursuing a second baccalaureate degree from Mesa State College
