English Program
English majors at Mesa State select one of three tracks: Literature,
Secondary Teaching, or Writing.
Literature majors choose from classes that transport them through
the ages and around the world. Guided by topnotch professors with
diverse research interests, students study methods of analysis in
courses in critical theory, western and non-western literatures,
rhetoric, popular culture, and film.
Secondary Teaching majors design curricula for course assignments,
observe fellow teachers, produce teaching portfolios, and work with
teachers in middle and high school classrooms.
Creative writers find an ample menu of writing classes taught by
nationally published faculty. Students can develop their creative
skills through membership in the Creative Writers Club, publication
in the Literary Review, or practical experience as editors for the
Literary Review, Pinyon, or the Pinyon Press.
Graduates work for publishers, schools, and software and computer
companies. They fill a wide variety of professional positions where
writing and thinking skills are valued.
