Criminal Justice
The Criminal Justice major is for students who are interested in
careers in law enforcement, corrections, courts, or law. The criminal
justice major provides students with a solid foundation of knowledge
in the criminal justice system, theories of criminal behavior, law
enforcement, courts, corrections, and substantive and procedural
law.
Students who major in Criminal Justice have a number of available
options after graduation. Some students further their academic careers
and attend graduate or law school. Either major or concentration
provides the necessary skills and academic background for future
academic success. In addition to furthering their education, students
may also find employment in the criminal justice system. The field
of criminal justice is a high employment field in Mesa County, the
State of Colorado and nationally. There is a high demand for students
in the fields of law enforcement, courts and corrections in all
levels of government and in the private sector in such areas as
personal security, loss prevention and investigations. Many of our
graduates are employed in criminal justice agencies across Colorado,
including the Grand Junction Police Department, The Mesa County
Sheriff's Office, Community Corrections, probation, parole, and
a wide range of other agencies. Many students complete valuable
internship experiences at either a local or regional site. Internships
provide students with the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge
and analytical skills in a supervised work environment, allows the
student to gain valuable work related-experience and skills, and
affords the student the opportunity to network in the criminal justice
field.
Students interested in law enforcement have the ability to complete
their B.A. degree and then enroll in the Peace Officer Standards
and Training Academy on the WCCC campus. With POST certification
and a B.A. degree, students are well prepared for a career in law
enforcement and parole with greater career advancement opportunities
than for law enforcement with only the POST certification.
