The Social Science B.A. is ideal for the self-motivated student
who has a variety of interests. Social Science majors select a
Primary Area (18 credits, of which 15 must be upper-division)
and a Secondary Area (9 upper-division credits) from the Social
and Behavioral Sciences taught at Mesa State (Anthropology, Economics
[only as a Secondary Area], History, Political Science, Psychology,
Sociology), but beyond the basic requirements of the program there
is a good deal of elective space that students can fill in with
courses of their own choosing. The end result is a program that
maximizes student choice while still providing rigorous and useful
course of study.
A Social Science major can be tailored to facilitate graduate
study in such fields as Law; additionally, the skills acquired
through the Primary and Secondary Areas, like the ability to conduct
face-to-face interviews, to compile and analyze qualitative and
quantitative data, to produce thorough and well-written reports,
etc., can be broken out and applied to any number of fields. Social
Science students, through pursuit of a program so largely of their
own making, prove their versatility and adaptability, two qualities
bound to serve them well on an ever-changing job market.
